Swap R60 wireless card before recovery or after?

The hard disk in my son's R60 failed and is being replaced under warranty. We will use recovery disks with the new drive. He has been dissatisfied with the original Intel wireless card so we bought the appropriate ThinkPad wireless card to change out with. Would it be better to swap the cards before recovery or after? Will the recovery process handle the card installation without problems? I know there are several steps to follow for a successful card uninstall/replacement. Thanks for any light you can shed.

Definitely before, so it can be recognized and installed within R&R.

That's the way I'd go about it anyway.

Before and keep it disabled in BIOS until all Windows and Lenovo updates are applied.
