Should I install the New x40 Driver on MS Website

#1 Post by chintapun » Thu Jan 06, 2005 1:28 am

I've use windows (XP Pro) update on microsoft update and found the following driver for my x40

IBM - Other Hardware - IBM PM Device
Date last published: 12/28/2004
Download size: 572 KB
IBM system software update released on November 05 2004.
System Requirements
Recommended CPU: Not specified.
Recommended memory: Not specified.
Recommended hard disk space: Not specified.
Help and support
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/

Can anyone tell me what is this driver. My guess would be something for power management (PM). Should I apply this update from Microsoft or just ignore it

That is the power management driver. You can get it via Windows Update or get it from the IBM web site.

If you go with WU check the version number, it is possible the IBM site has a newer version.

I recommend you never use Windows Update to update IBM Drivers - use only the IBM website to find and update drivers. Some people using Windows Update have been successful; a number have not. Unless you have a critical need to do so, don't do it. ... JD Hurst

Never ever update drivers from third party developers like MS in this case is. Or do it and you can await blue screens very soon ...

That is a bit of a stretch. The WU site does a good job of installing drivers as they are updated. The only issue is that they are sometimes out of date with recently released versions.

It is possible that a driver update can cause a blue screen but it could happen via WU or from the .exe that the user manually installs.

I installed it for kicks on mine. No problems.
Don't exactly know of any improvements, but no problems.
The machine still will not go into Hibernation by timer after being in stand-by while on battery. But no big deal.

Ahh, had this problems for a while! This is a BIOS setting, after four calls to and from IBM support we finally managed to unearth the setting for enabling hibernation from timer in battery mode. I don't remember exactly, but there is a BIOS field for something along the lines of "Wake-up while in battery mode". Basically you have to set in BIOS to allow events from the machine to "wake it up" while in suspend mode (evidently the call to write memory to disk and hibernate is such a "wake-up" event). There is a big warning screen afterwards, but that's about it, it did the trick for my X40 and t42p.

PM if you have any questions

Thats been buggin me for month's. Wasn't really a big deal just kinda bugged me. I had called IBM several times with a different answer each time and it still never worked.
Thanks again.
