Intel 5300 WiFi Link card possible in T60p without BIOS prob

#1 Post by Crunch » Mon Oct 06, 2008 8:51 pm

Hey folks,

As soon as my check I sent to my new source for gizmos clears, I'll be getting the new Intel 5300 WiFi Link 802.11n card.

My BIOS wouldn't accept the Intel 4965AGN when I was upgrading to an N card, which I didn't want at the time anyway, but this one I DO want.

Will it run without having to mess with the BIOS in my T60p, and if not, what kind of hacking into the BIOS will have to be performed?

Thanks! :)

not only do you have to hack the bios (which could ruin it) but you also have to add an additional antenna for N mode, since the ABG cards only came with two antennas and N mode requires a third antenna. Billbolton the mods did get the N capable wireless card in his Thinkpad he also added an extra antenna under his right palm rests or something.

There is half listed hacking methods here (used for miniPCI and not miniPCI express, but theory should be similar), but you are doing so at your own risk, your laptop may end up as useless brick if you get it wrong....

Thanks for your response. Well, I've already done the adding of the 3rd antenna by way of installing the Atheros AR5008X N card, which works incredibly well. I just wanted to try out the Intel 5300 card in order to see if it's worth upgrading to.

I also have the 3rd antenna under my palm rest, and for that card, I did not have to do any messing with the BIOS.

How risky would anyone ascertain that the hacking into the BIOS would be??

Thanks! :)

Hi Crunch,
I have the T61p and the 5300 is installed but I did have edit the bios. Got it from zender.
Look through the threads and find his name. PM him and ask for what you need.

Hope it helps.

The risk would be that you brick you laptop.

Thanks for the reply.

So how's the Intel 5300 working for you?? Have you had any other N cards prior to this one? Are you able to connect at 450Mbps?

Thanks. ;)

Hey Crunch,
Sorry for the late response.

The card itself is working great. That is after I changed the bios. I am running it with the Linksys WRT610N dual channel router and it seems to be a bigger headache that anything. I am getting a steady 270. Have not seen any faster. Maybe there is something I can do to speed it up but its fast enough for me at the moment.

How is your venture going?

Right now there are no consumer level 802.11n 3x3 router/access points available as far as I'm aware, so 270 Mbps is as good as it gets with any consumer level 802.11n WiFi router/access point kit at present.

In terms of comparitive performance, for me, in my circumstances, my Thinkpads with 4955AGN cards show identical 802.11n performance to those with 5300AGN cards

Cheers,

Bill B.
