I'm throwing in the towel here, hoping for some help.
I have a customer's Thinkpad R52 that is acting very strangely. At first it was giving me errors to indicate bad RAM so I put in a new 1GB stick and continued. Ran all the delousing apps I usually do and found very little in the way of malware. At one point I tried to boot into safe mode as both the normal user and that admin but got an error about not being able to verify license etc. but I could boot into normal ok. Installed SP3 and all updates that come after including optional hardware updates for the machine (about6) and upon reboot I got that same error message I had seen while trying to get into safe mode, once. Now no error shows but the system will reboot at the logon screen after a about 20 seconds or after about the same time if a logon is entered. Even selecting "Disable auto restart on sys error...." will not produce a blue screen with any usable info, just reboots.
I left the machine turned off for a bit and tried again. I got into windows normally and set to look into the license issue. After running the MGAdiag utility and the ProdID found in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] did not match the tools results so I changed the ProdID and thought that was the end of it. Same reboot happened again and again. If I tap the access IBM button and run diagnostics It come back ok and will let me into Windows on the subsequent boot.
At the same time all this is happening is another error and that's with the battery. It will say either 1% or 30% nothing else. I tried the reset thing but it comes back with error after a few minutes even though otherwise it says the battery is fine. Only 15 cycles on it but I don't know how the battery is used since it's not my machine. Note that the above errors can occur with or without the battery inserted.
I'm off to IBM's site with the dog now to see if it can find any driver issues but I'm about at the end of my tether with this one. Any input would be appreciated.

Just a tech. Don't own a Thinkpad, sorry.
Run the full contingent of PC-Doctor tests, and load up mobilemeter to check for CPU temps. Throw in an hour of looped memtest86 for good measure.
