240X Internal Wireless and Antenna Placement
240X Internal Wireless and Antenna Placement
I recently picked up a 240X in a swap here and have been playing around with it. I wanted to use the PCMCIA slot for one of those hide-inside USB 2.0 cards so I had to install the wireless internally.
I thought I'd post some tips for anyone else who is doing this upgrade:
1. Mini-PCI card height is limited by the LCD connector. The Intel 2200BG fits well but the 91P7301 is a little tight.
2. I used the flat antennas and mounted them inside the cover (behind the LCD) but above the aluminum shield, and they work well. Sometimes the lack of metal reinforced plastic is a blessing. These antennas were originally from a Toshiba and have very thin wires so I had no problems with running them through the same path as the LCD cable.

I too have a 240X with internal wireless.
But since I didn't want to disassemble the display, I installed the antennas under the keyboard.
But since reception ist bad, I'm going to move the antennas into the display.
From your experience, how complicated is this?
Any tricky parts, that I may want to know about?

I placed the antennas in the 240X display twice and it is not tricky, just a bit of a pain (but worth it as I've got better reception!).
Best bet is to take a look at the hardware maintenance manual from the Lenovo site:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 9k5649.pdf
You'll have to take off the keyboard, so unscrewing the keyboard screws from the underside of the laptop is a must.
I disconnected the display from the 240X - the screen cable can slide thru the top bezel, you'll just have to lift it ever so slightly as it is not a flat connection.
The hard part is removing the screen bezel, as it's stuck on their pretty tight. There really was no need to remove the LCD, just lifting it enough to place the antennas around the screen.
The link below is for a TP A31, but just take a look at the antennas are placed along the edges of the screen bezel, as it is almost the same thing:

I agree that the LCD bezel is the most difficult part. The easiest way to remove it (after you remove the necessary screws) is to slide a credit card something similar between the bezel and lid then pry/push with it. At times, I've used a thin screwdriver, but there's a risk of damaging something if you use a metal tool.emoticonartist wrote: The hard part is removing the screen bezel, as it's stuck on their pretty tight. In my case, I did remove the LCD and inverter. The LCD comes off quite easily after the screws are removed. This in one benefit of having a fat bezel. The inverter you can leave attached, but if you decide to remove it, watch out for the plastic tabs holding it in. Also, there is some sticky tape holding it down as well.
