Dead USB connection in 600X?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

Dead USB connection in 600X?

#1 Post by The Olde Man » Fri Oct 10, 2008 8:10 am

600x with Linux Mandriva and FireFox on Comcast

Been using this successfully on a cable card to a cable modem. Then tried a USB 'link' gizmo that works on my IBM 600 using FireFox, and got nothing.

Mandriva says it cannot find the server and the gizmo does not flash LED lights as it does on the 600 where it works quite will using FireFox.

I got a big motherboard problem here?

Is there any 'converter' that will allow me to use the 'card'? It has both cable and telephone connections, I think.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I have a 600X with a dead USB port. I bought a PCMCIA USB 2/ Firewire card, installed the USB 2 drivers that came with it (not needed in XP), and have functional USB again. USB 2 will still run USB 1.1 or maybe even USB 1. If you don't need the Firewire, you can get a USB only PCMCIA card. Other than the USB port being dead, the laptop isn't affected by this at all. Its other serial port works just fine.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware of that particular scheme but I was sure there had to be something out there.

Now back to my smoke signals which is something I really understand.

Just make sure if you do buy a USB PCMCIA card that it's a cardbus card and not the new kind.

I just bought a PCMCIA USB card with 2 connectors for less than $10 including shipping on eBay for my Thinkpad 570. The built-in USB port on the 570 just wouldn't work even with a USB drive that worked on my Thinkpad 600E.

Sounds good. What brand did you get?

Most of the dealers on eBay for these cards are based in Hong Kong. My seller was from the USA and happened to have just one of them to sell. And looking at my receipt again, it cost me $13.

I should add that if you have one of these cards, you won't be able to use another PCMCIA card similar to what happens when you plug in a WiFi card and its associated bulk with the antenna.

If you put the big USB-card into the upper slot, the 3com x-jack WiFi-cards will work below.

Or look for the IBM USB2.0 cardbus card P/N 33L3245... with adapter cable, or other cards with adapter cable.

Or look for USB 2.0 cardbus cards from AKE... also with bluetooth - very nice solution.
