T21/T22 - Best MB Replacement

#1 Post by eunix » Sat Oct 11, 2008 8:34 am

First I want to thank the community for the detailed information on the BOD issue.

I have a T21/22 (900 Mhz CPU) machine that I had loaned to a friend which started having the BOD issue. I am not sure which model it is because I replace the MB a few years back because I had a late night spillage (coffee) accident with it. When I picked the machine up it powered right up for me but soon had the BOD symptoms.

This was one of my favorite OLD machines that I want to keep so instead of trying to fix the machine at the hardware level, I would like to know what is the fasted MB that I can upgrade the machine to that will fit in the case form factor?

I have been looking for T23 MBs on ebay but would like to put in the fastest MB that will work.

Thanks

Eunix

The T23 will not fit, close but not going to do it
I think there were a very few 1.0 gig T22's out there
RealBlackStuff will probably know

Thanks Ron,

I should have waited - I got the itchy trigger finger and just picked up a T23 on eBay. Well maybe I will sell it for parts. It is a PIII but it was such a good machine. I will have to see when the T23 gets here.

Ron is correct, T23 mobos won't fit in the T20/T21/T22 bases.
Most powerful upgrade would be a T22 motherboard 26P8098 and a 1.00GHz CPU of either model Intel SL53S or SL5TF.
The SL5CH from a T23 will NOT fit in a T20/1/2
These 1GHz. CPUs require the larger T22 cooler.
Their max. RAM is 512MB (2x 256MB PC100 Low Density).
You will also need to update the BIOS to the latest available version.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks RBS. It looks like I have added a T23 that I just picked up on eBay. I still need to figure out the best way to resolve the BOD issue with my T21.

Maybe I should retire it and sell it for parts. I really hate to dispose of such a reliable machine...well it was reliable all of these years.

The T23's look for all the world identical to the T20, 21 and 22's.
Looking at the bottom you will notice the covers are slightly different.
Look at the fan size very carefully and you will see very slight differences.
Taking the palm rest off will yield many differences around the fan opening. The T20-22 palm rest can be made to work on the T23, but not vice versa....

That said, the T23's is very close to the perfect laptop. It runs everything I have thrown at both of mine.
It does not like Roxio 9, but then I dont like Roxio 9, so thats a mute point.
It handles eMail, Surfing, Mild Gaming, torrents, and so forth.
Mine logs at least 4 hours a day, every day.
I dont watch TV much so my news comes for the net.

My 2 cents worth

The T23 came in and I can see the differences. I will break down the T21/22 and try the board level solutions.

What to do ... What to do

#8 Post by eunix » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:11 pm

Previously on Eunix's Thinkpad Delima......

The T23 came in and is working find. I have loaded it with Ubuntu and am using at my super Linux work box!

I have yet to press my T61 into full production use as I don't want to migrate and consolidate my current workhorse laptops yet. What a pain.

My T21/22 booted up today and I am typing on it now but I would like to get some recommendations from you the experts!. It has a 900Mhz processor in it because I upgraded the MB years ago and I don't want to throw it away. It has been a solid machine and I can still use it but I don't want to spend a lot of money to fix it. I have a lot of extra goodies for it that I can use with the T23 (which is why I bought the T23).

I don't really want to buy another MB because the MB may develop the same problem. The USB port in the back does not work anymore so I may not have any choice.

I can not seem to find a definitive resolution to the problem. I am taking any suggestion!

Thanks,

Eunix

I have a 900MGz T22 MoBo, but I gave up on it. The LCD would come and go, but the external monitor always worked. I got a huge deal on a new base with MoBo about a week after it started and just set it aside. Not a clue if it is fixable. If you are interested shoot me a PM. I would need sell it strictly "as is". It is bare bones.
