T4x Technical Reference?

#1 Post by racarate » Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:41 am

Hi there!

I've been using a 600x for a long time, and just upgraded to a T40p. I'm a little concerned that the documentation standards have changed in the four years between their respective release dates.

For the 600x, I had three documents:

-User Reference
-Hardware Maintenance Manual
-Technical Reference

The last one was especially cool, and contained details on I/O addresses SMAPI functions, even cache operation!

Unfortunately, I can't find a technical reference for the T40p. Does it exist? I've only found:

-Hardware Maintenance Manual
-Service and Troubleshooting Guide

Which appear to be basically the same thing. I'm dying to know the gory details of my T40p, where should I look?

Welcome to the forum, Nick!

You ask a very good question - and with reference to the thread Do an "IBM Service Manual" exist (not the HMM)? I actually believe that an "IBM Service Manual" indeed exist (being different from the Hardware Maintenance Manual - the HMM). However, as also discussed in that thread, the "IBM Service Manual" does not seem to easy to obtain. If it had been available (even at some cost), I would personally have been very interested in purchasing a copy.

By the way, you state that the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" and the "Service and Troubleshooting Guide" appear to be basically the same thing - that's not quite the case in my opinion... have a closer look for yourself! You will find links to all (publicly available) T40p publications in the User's guides and manuals - T40p.

PS: Feel free to offer me a copy of the "IBM Service Manual" (for T42/p's), if you happen to find one!

Thanks for the reply! I've not heard of this "Service Manual" before... but judging on name alone I don't think it's quite what I am looking for. The technical references are aimed more at programmers than at repairmen.

The only ones I can find on the internet are for the 500/600/700 series.

Take a look:
