What about DPI? Is it the same on both machines? Can't think of anything else off the top of my head right now what else it could be.

It always could just be your mind going nuts. :D

Many 1440 Dells do or did ship with lower DPI settings from DisplayProperties | Settings |Advanced | General.

An easy way to tell is to go to google or cnn, and you'll notice that logos which should be smooth have jagged lines at regular intervals from imperfect interpolation.

Any beneficial reason at all as to why they would do this?

yah I was right.. the dpi in advane general is 96 on both.. this is myserous.. for eample I can fit 6 windows in my start bar on dell and 5 on ibm.. same number of additional icons, quick launch etc.

another hting at lower resolutoins the stuff on the thinkpad is bigger than ibm.. i'm thinking there's something going on here..

Are you using the same Windows "themes" on both machines? The default IBM theme is a "modified" XP theme with slightly larger fonts etc...

This could make a difference I think.... Try running the Windows XP theme on both.

Can you post up some screenshots from the two computers? We could let you know in a split-second if we could see it with our own eyes.

You can email to kennhwang@gmail.com if you can't put them online.

n3il was right. althrouhg it shows as normal in windows when you hcange hte team or "really" set it to normal then it goes to the same resolution as my dell. but I leanred something useful. who actually uses it on ibm's bigger fonts? I kind of like hte smaller ones for clarity even through my visison sucks.

Also do you thinkpads mad vibrates hwne you start typing around 100wpm? I never noticed on dell because it was probabyl really heavy but it vibrates my entire metal shell in my desk

thats some crazy typing.. i saw both laptops at my school computer.. the dell 1400x1050 and the 1600x1200 15" t42... i was kinda disappointed that the t42 coudlnt adjust down to 1400x1050.. and any other resolution was a bit blurry..

I type at about 100-110wpm, and while I do notice that the keyboard tends to beep when I don't lift off of three simultaneous keypresses fast enough, the machine itself is rock solid. I'm surprised you don't notice it on the Dell, since the IBMs tend to have much more solid keyboards (the Dell keyboards have thin baseplates that flex a lot, and the keys clack very loudly).

You might have a made-in-China keyboard in the TP, which IS much louder flexy than the original and imo far-superior Thai keyboard.

Unfortunately, no LCD can adjust down in resolution like a CRT - outside of native resolution it will always be blurry and aliased.

Yeah, that's the common story with Dells. You'd figure they could find something more substantial to try to shave off weight from :/ I guess it's cheaper for them to ship out 5k new keyboards a week than to build them with better quality.

Other than that, I can't think of why your laptop would shake when touch-typing. I type an inordinate amount day in and out (the matte finish wore off my most-used keys in about a month) but never noticed any strange resonance/vibration from it. Maybe the rubber feet on the bottom are misaligned? The only other suggestion I have is to dampen the keyboard by placing a business card or thin strip of felt under the edges.

Could very well be the desk, but I imagine you'd get some kind of vibration on any notebook.

I have a zeroshock sleeve, and I typically put my laptop on top of that when I type - it helps dampen what little vibration/noise there is, and though mostly psychological, makes me feel like the laptop is even more solid than it is :P

I'm not sure whether to buy zeroshock or powersleeve. Zeroshock is a lot cheaper but it's not really form fitting like hte powersleeve :s
