ways to connect to the internet?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Tue Oct 14, 2008 9:15 pm

okay so I am moving to miami for 4 months. the place where I will be staying at will not have an internet. what are my options of getting internet working on my T60?
UPDATE well i need to have internet working at all times and make sure that it is reliable. so starbucks and stealing neighbor's internet is out of the question (no i don't think it is consider stealing but thats off topic). i also can't sign up for a yearly contract as i will be staying in miami for only 4 months. so what are my options now?

Sounds like your only choices would be:

- poach a wireless signal off of a neighbor who has an open AP (note: I'm not advocating this!)
- find a local store or library which offers free ethernet/WiFi
- sign up for wireless broadband access from any provider servicing the Miami area (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc.)

With XP, I have:
* Wired internet
* Wireless internet
* Dial up internet (local provider)
* Dial up internet (Mobility Pass or iPass)
* Sony Ericsson air card

They all work and all the tools (I am thinking primarily of VPN) work with all the connections.

Unfortunately, I am now depending on Vista 64-bit

* Dial up internet does not work (VPN not supported)
* Sony Ericsson does not work
* PPTP VPN using any connection method is not supported.

Keep in mind if you go with a wireless internet provider (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint) that there is a cap of the unlimited plan of 5GB. Sprint used to not have a cap, but recently they added it. If you go over that cap, there is a possibility that your account will be terminated. Hopefully there might be a hotspot near by that may be in range to where you live.
