T61 HDA Modem

Does anyone know what this modem is?

For sure, it will not pass VPN packets (Juniper Netscreen / SoftRemote) and is a problem for me. Safe-Net Inc has already proven they can use a standard modem and run VPN, and I know the product works on my own Vista box via Ethernet (Wired or Wireless). So I am pretty sure the modem is a problem.

If I read between the device management lines, it runs on the High Definition Audio bus (ergo, HDA), and so is a throwback to modems of yesteryear that were also pretty much useless.

Can the modem be replaced with a real one?

Might there be a real PCMCIA modem that would work in a T61p?
