Power Manager for Ubuntu

hello,
have installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my T43
right now it works quite fine
but don't know how to get Power Manager like I had in XP(showing time of battery life , etc).
could anyone help me with that

would be very gratefull

Right click the top bar, you can add applets to it, like a battery guage.

Yes Ubuntu has a built-in applet, but I think the OP wants something similar to the XP applet, i.e., green battery that can display the time remaining. If so, you may want to look at kthinkbat. It's for KDE, so you may not want to use it.

The gnome applet has bigger horizontal icon with time as well.

yeah, just choose "Expanded View" in the "Battery Charge Monitor" preferences, once added to the panel...

i was however thinking about something else that's vaguely related to this thread; is there any way to mirror lenovo's power manager software functionality on linux? i mean to set it up so it will only start charging battery if it drops below certain level, like 60% or something like that

anybody heard of anything like that? i completely killed my brand new battery for X30 in a year and i suspect it was because i had it on AC power with battery in the laptop most of the time; it was some cheap 3rd party battery but still...

on the other hand isn't the electronics inside preventing the battery from being recharged when on AC power? but then what would be the purpose of above mentioned functionality in the windows power manager from lenovo... ?

Check out ThinkWiki. Specifically, you'll want to look at the tp_smapi module.

thanks Superego, looks like that's exactly what I was looking for, funny things is I didn't see it earlier, I spent some time on thinkwiki...

well h'anyway, this particular functionality is not supported on X30, so I guess I'll have to wait till I get a newer Thinkpad
