ThinkPad T42 and Conflicts with Dock II 2877

#1 Post by MLA » Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:12 pm

Hi,

I have the following problems with a just-acquired refurbished ThinkPad T42: (XP Professional SP2: All updates from IBM with exception of BIOS and embedded controller)

T42 works flawlessly except that battery (OEM IBM 6 cell) will not charge. Orange battery light continually blinks. My voltmeter shows battery is at 0.0 volts. Instructions that came with refurbished unit said that battery was completely discharged and would have to be charged for at least 8 hours. It won't charge.

Q1) Is there any way of determining that it is the battery that will no longer take a charge or is defective and not the T42 charging unit that is at fault without investing in a new battery?

When the T42 is inserted in Dock II and powered on from either the dock II switch or from the T42 switch, I immediately receive three error messages:

Conflict: PCI Serial Bus Controller on Motherboard, Bus:02 Device: 00 Function 02
Conflict: PCI Network Controller on Motherboard, Bus: 02 Device: 01 Function 00
Conflict: PCI on Motherboard, Bus: 02, Device 03, Function 00

Tests conducted so far: My old rock-solid ThinkPad T21, (XP Professional SP2, all updates current from IBM) works fine when inserted into same Dock II – it recognizes the devices on the Dock II, so problem at first glance does not appear to be with Dock II. As mentioned earlier, current drivers on T42 are up-to-date except for BIOS (Version 3.06f 2004-06-18, Embedded Controller 3.02).

Q2) Any suggestions for resolving these three conflicts?

Thanks

I should have added:

After I get message about 3 conflicts, screen says to press F1. I try but nothing happens. Machine is frozen. Because machine freezes immediately after startup and error messages, when hooked to Dock II, I'm unable to determine what IRQs are in conflict with each other on the Dock II and the T42 so that I can reset IRQs on T42.

Recovery mode:

I shut it down, remove from Dock II, and power up. I get the usual ThinkPad splash screen, but it proceeds no further until I hit F1, which takes me to the BIOS, startup, etc. setup screen. I then select the startup option, select the option that goes through complete memory scan, etc. rather than the quick startup. I then select F10 (Save and restart), and machine goes through memory check (~1500 Mb) and says that everything is OK and proceeds to splash screen and normal boot procedure, functioning normally after that.

Have tried several times, and have noted that unless I do the complete memory scan after freeze, machine will not return to normal operation. I have to invoke the long bootup option to return to normal mode of operation. However, once machine is back to normal, I restart, hit F1, select startup option that allows for fast boot, hit F10 for save/restart, and machine has returned to normal.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
