What is the "Trusted Platform Module" update?

#1 Post by michaelj » Sat Jan 08, 2005 1:22 am

Does anyone know what this update does?

I can't see it listed in my Device Manager as per IBM's guide to checking which version I have, although Windows Update listed it as an update for my machine, and I see that it was recently released as an update by IBM

Thnx

The Readme says ist clearly: performance improvement. If you have installed IBM CSS 5.41, this update is already included and you have to do nothing.

re TPM module- is the Client Sec Subsystem worth installing?

#5 Post by michaelj » Sat Jan 08, 2005 11:06 am

Well, I called IBM Support as I wanted an answer. The Support person had never heard of it, but after checking with someone else, she told me it was some sort of security software and nothing to do with the performance of my Thinkpad.

The readme description for the driver says:

What This Package Does
This package provides the TPM driver for Windows 2000/XP.
The TPM driver enables or updates the TPM functions
on the following ThinkPad computers.

This release supports the following systems:

- ThinkPad T42
- ThinkPad T42p

If you have IBM Client Security Software v5.41 or later installed on
your ThinkPad system, this update is not required.

To determine if you should update the TPM driver, refer to the
"Summary of Changes" section.

To update the TPM driver, refer to the "Installation Instructions"
section.

Released Versions
-----------------
Version 2.1.0.56 Initial release for ThinkPad T42 and T42p
Version 2.1.0.62 The code was optimized for improved performance

IBM suggested I install either the TPM or the CSS software.

I wondered what people think about the usefulness of the Client Security Subsystem software, as I do not have it on my machine?
