Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

long shot: use 600E top on 570 ?

#1 Post by ieee488 » Sun Oct 19, 2008 9:59 pm

I know this is a long shot.

The LCD on my 570 is only capable of 800 x 600 which bugs me.
I believe that the LCD on the broken 600E is good.

Are you sure its 800x600? Is that a 12" LCD? I've never owned any of the 600 or 570 series that came with that size LCDs. All mine had the 13" LCDs and they were all XGA (1024 x 768). Its been a while since I've opened up a 570 lid, but I distinctly remember reading somewhere that the LCDs for it were thinner than on the 600 series so they wouldn't fit.

If you're interested, I do have a broken 13" LCD from a 570 and I can take some measurements.

It is definitely SVGA. I double-checked using the barcode number on the bottom of the 570 at lenovo.com

I guess I am asking whether I can move the lid from a 600E to the 570?

measuring total hinge width I find: 600e 78mm; 570e 102mm
but the LCD panels themselves look similar: have you checked the
two HMMs to see what panels each machine uses?

Thanks for that suggestion.

Unless, I am mistaken it looks from the HMMs that there is no commonality in parts between the 13.3" TFT for the 570 and the 13.3" TFT for the 600E.

Sigh!

If I buy a 570 with a 13.3" LCD, is it just a matter of removing some screws and moving the lid over?

I'd be rather careful with that...some old ThinkPads have resolution-specific motherboards, and I wouldn't be too surprised if 570 fits in that glove...

I have a "donor" 570 here with a perfectly good 13.3" XGA screen.
Trouble is I'm on the other side of the pond - otherwise you could have it for a few beers ...

There is a broken 570 on eBay which supposedly has a good LCD.
I PM'd the seller about the exact model #, but he hasn't responded.

It is probably all for the better since I probably should quit while I am at it.
I have already put in way too much money on this unit. I am kicking myself for not noticing that it had the smaller LCD which means 800x600 only. ARGH!!!!
