How to test hard drive? *PICS*

I thought it was my fan that is so loud, but now I am thinking what if it is my hard drive is about to die. How can I test it to see if problems with it are coming?

If it's just a matter of determining where a noise is coming from, remove the hard drive then turn on the machine. If the noise is gone then you know what caused it.
