When I had mine, went to a 7k200 from the stock 5k120 Hitachi hard drive, faster HDD made the most improvement for me. 2GB memory

With my 61 Faster and bigger HDDs and More Mem was key again.

You can do the CPU but you void the waranty, I did it before it is not too bad if you a mechanicaly incline. But only worth it if you do CPU intensive tasks like I do.

Agree (on the suggested upgrade and on the warranty issue). A T7400 Core 2 Duo is what I'd suggest. Anything less is not really an upgrade, and the higher end chips (T2700/T7600) are disproportionally more expensive (as you would expect from top chips in their corresponding classes).

I enjoy the build quality and UXGA flexview LCD. I have added some upgrades to my T60p along the way. I have upgraded the T2500 Core Duo to the T7600 Core 2 Duo. I have upgraded the 100gb 7200 drive to the 200gb 7200 rpm drive. I have upgraded the memory from 1gb to 4gb. I have upgraded the optical drive to a 39T2829 which is the T61 multiburner. I upgraded the motherboard with a late T60p motherboard. This newer motherboard has the ATI V5250 GPU. This was merely a replacement that happened to have the newer GPU and not an intended upgrade.

Recently I configured a 14" T60p identically. The memory was 1gb. A cloned drive of my primary system was installed. After playing for just a few moments I noticed a big differnce in opening programs and overall performance. I was surprised because the only difference was the 1gb of memory. I added 2gb more and performance was on par with my primary machine. I can say then that I recommend bumping memory to 3gb. This is a resaonably priced upgrade which I think makes a big difference.

Where is the best place to get a Core 2 DUO. If it is from eBay, does it come in a seal box?

I found mine in another ThinkPad. At the time the price of a single stand alone CPU didn't make sense for me. eBay would be a good place to look.

Thanks Brad,

I am looking for a T7400 at eBay and is asking for CAD$183 (new but not come in retail box).

http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-INTEL-CORE-2-DUO ... m153.l1262.

It's part number is SL9SK but sometimes I see in other place is SL9SE. I am not sure are they all the same and if the SL9SK can be used in my machine.

Thanks.

Memory up to 3GB and a nice big fast hard drive will do you wonders more than an upgrade to a C2D.

My upgrade to my T60 are :
- cpu to T7200 c2d
- hd to 7k200 to 7k320
- ram to 3gb

I've just bought a T400 couple weeks ago and sold my T60 to a budget minded friend with the orginal cpu put back into it. I now have a T7200 cpu for sale. I bought it brand new and used in my T60 for around 8 months running Vista Ultimate 64 and I did see noticable performance difference. If you are interested, pm me for price.

Haven't upgraded my T60 yet, but these are what I am contemplating:

250 GB Seagate 7200 RPM instead of my 60 GB 5400.

DVD-RW burner, instead of DVD/CDRW burner

RAM upgrade, maybe when I upgrade to Vista from Windows XP Pro. I have 1.5 GB DDR-2 now.

My upgrades:
2GB RAM,
SXGA+ LCD.

Next on the list:
320GB HDD @ 7200rpm

Considering:
Vista
DVD-writer
Bluetooth module
Advanced Mini Dock + some nice big monitor

Btw, I really like my T60, wouldn't want any other laptop.

I replaced the original HD with a segate 320G/7200. It runs not only faster, but even quiter and cooler.

Looking forwards to upgrade the cpu now and hoping that I can keep it for the next 1-2 years until the next new 13.3" display thinkpad comes up.

The marginal cost of a 320GB drive is very small. That's the way I'd go. There's very few choices for the T optical drive. The older 2x drives start at around $60 on eBay while the 8x drives are much more expensive like $150+, at least the last time I checked.
