Annoying problem; Computer beeps when I type my name!

#1 Post by umdenken » Sat Jan 08, 2005 7:56 pm

Hi,

I just got a new T-42, and I have this annoying problem. Basically, there are certain words I type that cause the computer / Windows to give an annoying 'error' beep, regardless of application. I noticed that it's apparently only certain leter combinations. It also seems to be due to the fact that, briefly, three keys are being pressed simultaneously.

It happens to me every time I type my name, Robert.

You can maybe reproduce this by pressing this three-key combination:

e-r-t

The computer beeps (loud!) on the 't'. Interestingly, not every three-key combination does this.

Anybody know what part of the system is doing the beeping? I've never had problems with a computer and my typing before. I do type fairily quickly, and I'd hate to change my working style to accomodate the hardware.

Thanks,
Robert

Huh. I can confirm that my T30 does the same thing. Never noticed it before.

So it's not a defect in your unit; it's a general thing.
I wish I had some constructive suggestions, but I'm stumped.

I don't know, but the beep is possibly a sign that you press too many buttons at the same time?

I've heard of this happening to people who type fast - too many keys pressed in close succession. Supposedly to do with the design/quality of keyboard :?:.

Does it happen if you type slower? Does it happen with other keys on that row?

I don't have a solution - just curious.

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi Robert-

One more idea: Change your name?

:P

No need for such drastic measures - just don't type the offending letters

Cheers,

This goes back a while, AFAIK. I used to have a 600X, and it did the exact same thing you describe here (beep on most three-key combinations).

Solution: don't press any three-key combos other than the infamous three-finger salute! :D

Goto the device manager, goto view->show hidden devices, udnersystem devices, uninstall "beep" and disable system speaker. that helped for me. It might be because youre pressing too many keys are once

Excellent! That was it. I understand the solution; makes sense. I still get the root behavior from the machine - it won't give me the 't' in 'ert' pressed at the same time, but at least it's not intensely annoying.

Thanks,
Robert

This is a common behavior that has to do with the serial nature of the keyboard. It happens when certain key combinations are pressed, and I've mentioned it several times on this forum (to my dismay, I got a lot of replies that consisted of "you need to learn how to type" >:( )

It's surprising that it happens on the IBMs, since I haven't run into a modern keyboard that does this since 1999.

Stopping the beep service bypasses the error, but it does not make the key combination work (unless you keep the third key held down while you let go of the first/second). I've just decided to live with it (what other options are there?).

I've noticed this too

on my T20 i was writing a report on something called Six Sigma
under that was a method/Process called CDOV that i/we researched.

So each time i wrote C-D-O-V i would hear the annoying beep.
But i had been writing on that report for several weeks and never had that problem, then suddenly the problem appears and never goes away.
Ive spelled C-D-O-V many many times properly almost as many times as "the" (is my report boring?, i'm not telling!)

Over time my T20

Didnt do it->Did it->Is still doing it

To sum it up, in the past the T20 didnt make the noise, so it must be a problem that can be solved.
But why is it happening(all off a sudden)?

Beats me!
Suggestions?

If you hold down' "CDV" together, it beeps (for the reasons I've described above). I believe you've gotten so used to typing "CDOV" quickly that you tend to have CD held down as you type DV, which activates the serial error and causes the beep.

Sevenw,

There are ways to permanently disable the beep, I think you can search to find out what they are. For now, typing "net stop beep" at the command prompt. This should take care of it, but I don't use this solution because it doesn't stop the actual problem (the third keypress doesn't work unless one of the other keys is let go) and it disables all other system-level beeps, which I don't necessarily want to do.
