Inverter or backlight?

#1 Post by imageroc » Sun Oct 26, 2008 7:15 pm

I have a IBM Thinkpad 600E.
The LCD screen goes black after a min it boots into windows.
Of course if I take flashlight to it, I can see the screen.
I took the screen casing off and I heard the buzzing noise coming from the upper right side of the SCREEN not the INVERTER.
So I am wondering is it the inverter that is bad or the Screen?
cause I thought the inverter buzzed when they were bad not the LCD screen its self.
also Where I hear the buzzing on the screen is not where the back lights are located the lights are on the bottom and left hand side of the LCD screen.

Welcome to the forum!

Has your LCD been reddish/pinkish on initial boot prior to this last episode?

Thank you.

As far as I know I didn't see any reddish or pinkish hue.
This is not my personal laptop its a friend of mines.
And I wasn't sure if ordering a inverter would be worth it as it is fairly old.
Also I notice streaking horizontal lines in the LCD display when turning off.

Well, inverter shouldn't be more than $20-30, so that would probably be worth it...

I would think it is the inverter, but I may be wrong.

On a separate note - about a month ago one of my laptop's LCD screen had a pink tint to it when it was booted up cold and about a week after that the LCD only stayed on for 30 minutes from a cold bootup and progressed so it would only stay on for a few seconds. I thought it was the inverter as I heard a buzzing coming from what sounded like the inverter and when the back light powered down the buzzing quit. I ordered a new inverter on ebay but it does the same thing so it should be the CCFL. My new CCFL should be in in a couple of days.

Yeah That's the thing I don't want to order the inverter for my friend and tell them $20-$30 should fix it. And then it still doesn't work.

because the buzzing is most definitely coming from the upper right
side on the screen no where near the inverter.

but when I turn the brightness up and down the buzzing sounds also gets louder as the brightness turns up and lower as I turn the brightness down.

so its a little misleading

I think, for 20-30$ you'll get a good running, complete display with all brezels, inverter... ask here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=11

I found a 600X for Replacement parts!
So I swapped out the inverters first which did not help.
Then Swapped out the LCD screen itself an keep the same inverter I started with. WORKED!!!
Works great.
So I guess if buzzing is coming from the screen itself it just might be the LCD and not the inverter that is the problem at least in this case it was.
I posted with my solution in case anybody else has a similar problem and can use this thread as reference.

Thank you all for your responses.

Hi,

sorry to do a wild hijack of this thread. I have an 600E with this symptomes:
  • screen that turns black: no back light;
  • flickering of the light;
  • light with pink coloration;
  • external screen worling.
From what I have read it might as well be a dead screen, isn't it?

I can't heard any specific noise coming from the machine apart from the fan and the HDD.

Regards,

Tam
