What they worth: T41 and R51

#1 Post by Chris001 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 12:29 pm

Hello All,

The company I work for is selling some of their old equipment to the employees. Sale conditions - as is, no AC adapter.

Condition of the equipment is used. Shiney keyboards / palmrests. Scuffed LCD covers and bottom plastics.

They were used on an external project for three years, returned to the company and used internally for a year.

All repairs done by IBM Ez Srev or IBM certified techs.

What I'd pay and what they are worth are two completely different animals. This forum is a tough market for that generation machine, your best bet is your local craigslist. I'd say you could get $275-325 for the T41 (you might be better off selling the hard drive here and buying a higher capacity newer drive). The R51 $200-250. Upgrading to a Pentium M processor is a cheap and easy upgrade that could up the estimate to $225-275 and only cost you $10-15. At least another 256MB RAM would help.

Please note that's based upon my local market, and being very patient about waiting for the right buyer. I don't know what things are like in Virginia, and you might be looking for a quicker sale.

Edit: downgraded my initial estimates a bit

I had an identical T41 a while back that I sold. Pull the HD and sell it by itself, definitely. There is a ton of demand for that drive, plus the machine itself will easily sell as well.

Just to clarify, do you mean what would we pay for these to your employer? That's how I initially read it - not necessarily that you were going to buy them and then put them up for sale here.

Of course it depends on how generous they are, but I'd go with the lowest of sparta.rising's estimates and perhaps knock off $10-15 based on what you say about the external condition and see whether I was successful.

Ohhhh. Thanks KristianJ, I misread everything. If you are buying them as-is from your company, I'd pay a lot less. A lot of companies just don't want to pay for hard drive disposal and machine recycling.

No issue with the AC adapters, they're $10 each in bulk (10 pack) on eBay.

Hopefully, "as is" means that at least your employer will guarantee that it isn't dead or defective when you get it. I'd test each for the loose GPU and any USB port issues. Assuming all is well, they are worth what was mentioned above. Obviously, you should try to get them for as little as possible.

The T41's are nicely spec'd and the R51's will make nice entry level machines with a few tweaks, as mentioned above.

I'd shoot for $150-$175 for the T41's and $100 for the R51's.

Good luck. Don't forget, you'll need to spend some time with each that you plan to offer for sale.

Update::

Background refresher - the company I work for is selling old laptops that were used on a outside contract for three years and then used in-house by employees for one year. The company now wishes to sell the laptops to the employees. The laptops show wear as shiney keys and normal usage in the laptop case.

They sold most of the laptops already and they have a few left over that have issues. The two that I'm looking at both need the LCD panels replaced. I can do the replacment myself and Google results for the replacement LCD 11p8348 are around $100.

So what I'm asking is - how much would you offer your employer for a five year old T41 laptop (2373-9FU w/40GB 5400RPM HDD NOT the 60GB 7200PM HDD) that needs an LCD panel. Laptop includes battery, CDRW drive, and AC adapter.

Thanks to all who replied earlier to this thread.

$100 at the most.

Without a working LCD panel, I'm sure your employer is considering just recycling the machine, offer low like $25-50.

If the rest of the machine was perfect, I'd go $50. (The first batch that had everything working would have been a better buy. Finding a high resolution LCD and doing the work will take money and time.)

Your employer should consider giving them away. They are 5 years old and fully depreciated. Not to mention, not working!

Not bad. Back in '01 I received a box of 760s and got a few running. It was a nice DIY. Like rebuilding a car.

I certainly wouldn't turn down any free thinkpad offer, nor refrain from a dumpster dive if I knew some were within. :D
