HELP! Replaced CCFL now Im seeing lines

#1 Post by VinnieZ » Tue Oct 28, 2008 8:20 pm

Hey guys, I just replaced the CCFL and test my laptop and it worked fine. However, after I put it all back together, all I see are lines up and down the screen The bulb works and the screen lights up, Im just not getting a picture on the screen. It doesnt make any sense to me.

Can anyone help?

I really cant figure this out. I tried just about everything I could think of. I used an old inverter and the new one that I bought. I went all the way back to step 1 of replacing the CCFL but I just cant get it.

What is weird is that it WAS working...windows would come up fine....then I disconnected to reassemble...then after I reassembled, tried it and it wouldn't work.

The lines are very strange too. Sometimes its a lot of lines, sometimes its a bluegreenish screen (like the windows screen) and there are a few lines scattered throughout.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Have you checked the cable connecting the LCD panel to the motherboard?

And have you tried applying pressure to the GPU - sounds like it could be the dreaded GPU solder failure, also.

Press down (just not enough to break anything) on the edges of the screen and see if that affects the lines. I once had a 14.1" screen that had a cable on the side come up some after the tube was replaced.

Thank you all for your responses.

sktn77a,
I dont think its the GPU. I think that I had that replaced while it was under warranty.

Tim M,
I havent checked the cable connection to the motherboard, Im not even sure how to get in there to check it, any suggestions?

AlphaKilo,
Ive tried pressing everywhere on the screen to try to get it to work and i couldnt get anything.

Any other ideas that I could try tonight?

You'd have to remove the keyboard and keyboard bezel (integrated into the palmrest in some models). Check the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) to be sure. You can do a search on the forum for more information.

It's possible you knocked the LCD cable loose or damaged it. If so, it should be a fairly easy fix.

If you had to replace the CCFL, you'd also likely have to disassemble so much of the screen that you'd get access to the column and row driver flex cable. If it makes "lines" now it means you have lifted some of the connection paths so that some sub-pixels are not driven and is just off. For TN this means that light is not blocked.
This means that when pressure is put onto a loose connection, it might or it might not work properly.

Remove the screen plastic bezel and check what others suggested - the LVDS cable must be in place firmly. Eventually put a strip of tape on it to secure it. If the problem still persists:
You'll either have to get it re-bonded (expensive)
or get a new LCD :(

Thanks all for your responses.

Troels,
Im sorry to be a pain, but can you be a little more specific. What is TN? and what do you mean by rebonded?

I already purchased a new inverter and a new CCFL, so I was thinking of buying a new video cable. And if that doesnt work, I was just going to buy a new LCD Screen off Ebay. I see them going for about $150.

It sucks, but Im just trying to save as much money as I can.

Also, can anyone tell me where I can find the manual so that I can figure out how to get to the spot where the video cable connects to the motherboard?

Thanks.
