X60s 2000MAh battery dead or not?

Hello all,

First of all, what a great forum!

Now, I have an X60s. I have the 5200MAh and the 2000MAh battery, which I have use interchangeably for about two years, some days a week. I have generally treated the batteries well, i.e. low temp and full charge and discharge (or close to, anyway).

The other day, the laptop just turned off. All died. I was on the small battery. I tried to fire it up again, could not. I plugged in the AC-adapter and the laptop started. The LED indicated very low, i.e. fast-blinking orange. In Windows the battery was not functioning, i.e. putting out volts but no amps, according to the index. It was indicated as faulty, or some other wording, and the little green indicator in the ThinkVantage software was red instead.

My question is this: IS the battery dead - it is not just a bad connection in the battery plug, messing up the SMBus connection? I am a student and replacing the small battery is pricey for me, so I'd like to be absolutely sure the battery is dead before I track down a genuine replacement on ebay...

Oh, and the battery was at 85% when it died.

Nobody is going to say they are absolutely sure your battery is dead and that you don't have some other problem. That's impossible.

My personal experience is that I consider myself lucky to get more than one year of life from a battery. I'm a heavy battery user, always unplugging and wandering around. When they go, they go, over a cliff. One day I get a couple of hours or more, the next day, next to nothing. I just buy another. Laptop batteries are consumables.
