Can't reflow - where to put card spacers?

I'm at my dad's house, without my IR thermometer, and I'm sure he needs a reflow. I'll wait to do it when I'm back in about 2 months, with the right tools.

In the mean time, I'd like to try minimizing his problems. I've heard people talking about using business cards, erasers, and stacks of paper to put pressure in the right locations. I was wondering how thick this padding is, and where exactly you place it.
