ID Tech LCDs for T4x

#1 Post by schen » Thu Oct 30, 2008 11:19 pm

I picked up a 14.1" LCD on eBay recently which is made by ID Tech with a part number of 11p8345 which apparently is an SXGA+ panel. It supposedly has some issues with 1024 x 768 resolution not displaying properly, so I decided to take a chance that the reason it didn't display properly was that it was a 1400 x 1050 panel. And at about $30 I figured it wasn't much of a risk. I haven't tested it yet, but will this weekend.

The reason for this post is that it's my understanding ID Tech was the manufacturer of the famous Flexview panels. So, did they make regular panel as well, and are these 14.1" SXGA+ ones the regular ones? I wasn't able to get definitive clarification by either the HMM or the tawbook.

Anyone care to clarify this?

If the FRU is 11P8346 (which I would assume it is), page 229 of T40/1/2/p HMM identifies it as being a SXGA+ LCD used on these machines...

None of the 14.1 inch SXGA+ are IPS (Flexview) panels.

Not 100% accurate, this is still the best LCD reference:

Of course the LCD in question is NOT an IPS one. But it IS an ID Tech panel, although a TN unit.

OK, that clarifies things. I haven't seen this page before. Apparently, this panel is an the regular ID Tech SXGA+ spec'd for the T40 through T42, regular and "p" versions.

I guess I'll see how it works this weekend. The nice thing about his particular screen is that it came with both the cable and inverter. So just those 2 parts alone pretty much covers the costs expended on this thing.

Well, this whole episode turns out very well.... although a little strangely though. It's a 14.1" SXGA+ panel which I was able to test and confirm this afternoon, and as it turns out; it's very nice, with no marks of any kind and very smooth.

I first tried using an LCD-less R51 which is supposed to be good, but it didn't display anything, so I figures some combination of cable/panel incompatibility. From there, I moved on to my old T41 that had run an SXGA+ assembly before, which fired the panel right up. However, in the process, I noticed that the cable was a little longer than the one on the other panel and the hibernated switch was in a different place. So, when I took the whole thing off I found the P/N and FRU numbers and looked them up. Loe and behold, the cable is 15" SXGA+ cable for the R5x machines! :?

It turns out very well, since that was a cable I was looking for anyway and didn't need another 14.1" cable. So now, I have a very good panel to go replace the one in my T42p with the white spots, a good inverter and a 15" SXGA+ cable that I needed to start with. All for about $30! :D Sometimes, deals can still be had on eBay I guess.
