Lenovo tells me that this dock will work with "all A, T, and X Series ThinkPad notebooks" and I'd like to buy one.

However, my machine type (2379) is not listed in the matrix of compatible systems; the 2378 is. I'd like to know if the Dock II would work with my machine before buying. The machine has been upgraded to a FireGL 128 MB motherboard (FRU 39T5473).

That's not my favorite dock in the world because 1, it's noisy, and 2, I've had some weird booting problems when running off of a KVM. Anyway, it should work with any T4X machine.

^ Fair enough, but that's the only T4x-friendly dock with a port (PCI, PCI-E, AGP) for peripherals such as a graphics card, right?

At any rate, if the price is right, I'd like one for playing around.

Last time I looked on ebay they were really inexpensive (<$50, sometimes < $30).

I've seen some with BINs around $45. However, I've had varying degrees of success with electronics purchased off the 'bay, so my first choice would be to get something from TPF members.
