Question About Matshita UJ 822S DVD Burner

I have confirmed that my DVD burner (Matshita UJ 822S) is faulty (swapped between laptops and problems followed, whereas new burner in my T42 works properly).

My DVD burner will burn CD's correctly (can be read on another machine) but it will not read any CD at all.

Is there a place to start looking to fix this problem or is my DVD burner destined for the trash because it won't read?

It is probably trashed.
Common wisdom would be to suggest cleaning the lens, but the same optics are used for read and writing.

Burning uses a different laser or at least a different laser driver than reading, so it is likely that either the reading laser or its driver is shot. It is not practical to repair these drives, so you best bet is to buy a replacement.

Look on e-bay. Occasionally you see brand new optical drives for a reasonable price.
