My t60 w Vista has *lost* drag and drop!

#1 Post by floete » Mon Nov 03, 2008 8:41 am

I'm posting this here instead of in the t60 forum because this is probably a Vista issue of some sort ... though feel free to correct me about that.

Anyway, I have suddenly lost the ability to drag & drop anything with my mouse. All other functions work fine. But the all-important d n d function has just up and vanished on me. Does anyone know what might be causing this? If I reboot, I get it back for a little while, but then it goes away again. I've switched mouses -- same problem.

Help!

I did some searching around. Drag-to-disc in Vista lives in Programs and Features, but Drag-and-Drop always comes up as mouse-related. You have switched mouses, but you might wish to also completely uninstall all mouse drivers, restart and re-install the newest drivers. ... JDH

okay, i'll give that a go. i think i understand how to uninstall the driver. go to device manager / mice / hid complaint mouse / driver and uninstall. is that right?

but then after that what's the easiest way to reinstall the newest drivers?

also: i installed logitech setpoint a few months ago and would like to get rid of it but can't see how. it doesn't show up in add/remove programs and doesn't have its own uninstaller and doesn't show up in the drivers list. any ideas, because that should probably go too, before i install new drivers, right?

thanks for your help!

(1) Yes

(2) Download the newest UltraNav driver for your ThinkPad, save it, and explode it into C:\Drivers. When you restart, point the request to add new hardware to the appropriate place in C:\Drivers. Alternatively, before you restart from step 1, run Setup from the folder in C:\Drivers that you just created (typically UNAV or UNAV 64).

(3) I would remove the Logitech drivers before steps 1 and 2. Now I had a failed attempt at a Logitech BlueTooth mouse on my Vista machine and I just used Programs and Features to get rid of it all. So if the uninstall is not there, go to the Logitech support site and see how to remove when there is no uninstall. Most vendors provide such methods.

Are you still able to drag n drop using the touchpad or the trackpad of your ThinkPad? Regarding USB mice :) you may want to have a look at the T60 driver matrix. At the bottom you will find a few Vista USB patches that you may have to apply to resolve your problem. My theory is (just a theory) that Vista recognizes your usb mouse as a detachable device and doesn´t allow it to run any file operations for that reason (which would be of course a complete non-sense of Vista since this device is just a mouse).

Good luck and post back

interesting. it *does* work when i use the red stick. huh. thanks for that! meanwhile, i went to the driver matrix and only saw 2 that referred to usb, on about power management and one about improving usb detection after resuming from sleep.

are those the two you are talking about?

thanks. i will report back!

oh and one other thing: after trying the pointer stick method a few times, drag n drop is now working on the mouse again. go figure. anyway, i'm going to hold off on the installs for a bit, to see whether it continues to work.

i have my doubts. 8)

Have you tried to boot up the Logitech CD to see if there is an uninstall option either on the main menu or somewhere on the CD itself?

unfortunately, i didnt install it from a CD but from the logitech site.

logitech suggests getting rid of set point using a third party uninstaller like something called revouninstaller. guess i'll give that a go.

meanwhile, i did the remove driver / add driver thing and so far so good. just hope it lasts.

thanks all for your help!
