100 background processes!!! aka tune up for sound...

#1 Post by infotime » Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:11 pm

I'm providing support for a friend of mine who recently started a business and bought a ThinkPad T61 for his main PC. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what background services and programs are required for basic operation.

Right now, with just about everything turned on, he's sitting at over 100 processes in task manager  As one might expect he's seeing erratic behavior, slowness, apps crashing, etc.

Recently I used msconfig to eliminate everything I thought wasn't necessary. He was very happy with the result. He could work it hard and it was rock solid. Except there was no sound.

No problem I thought. I re-enabled a couple of .exe's related to the sound driver. No go. Had to turn on about 17 IBM services and startup items to get sound to return.

Question: can someone tell me what specific IBM services or exes are needed to make the sound work?

Question2: Is there a good reference somewhere on what all these different IBM services and executables do?

Usually, the driver is provided by soundmax, search for smax, soundmax, audiodg...

I don't know the exact version of your friends machine, can you post model number?

I find process explorer to be a godsend when tracking down what is running.

How much RAM does the laptop have? I have most of the Lenovo utilities, as well as a bunch of stuff running in the systray on my laptop. Sits at 95 processes idle 1gb of RAM used (4gb total). Plenty fast and responsive. If his laptop only has 1gb of RAM, I could see a process count like that causing issues.

Question:
XP? Vista? Which version? Vista retail come with around 85 proceses by default. Home Premium and Ultimate have some aditional multimedia related processes (media center and so).

If you're using XP, 100 processes is a lot. Vista ultimate, installed from retail plus needed drivers (not all, only necessary) is over 90 processes.

If you have enough ram (1gb+) that's not a problem. Only startup and logon are something slow, not general behavior.

Melvyn: I only have remote access right now. I'll have to hunt down the exact model number later. I can tell you from System Properties that it has a Core 2 Duo at 2.40 GHz, a T8300.

I had re-enabled these two items in an attempt to get sound to work:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAXPnP] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAX] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\Smax4.exe /tray

It wasn't until I turned on 17 more Lenovo processes that I got sound to work again :(

heelix: I love Process Explorer too.

comptiger5000: the machine has 2 GB RAM running XP Pro

One thing I'm embarrased to admit is that we've got AVG 8.0. I think I'll replace that with something smaller to see if it helps.

Startup keys fires services. So, stopping theese keys will stop the services.

You're running 33 instances of hp service. that's not lenovo!
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\HPBOID.EXE

you're running 5 processes from apple, including from apple mobile phone, itunes and bonjour dns responder.

7 processees from log me in.

from startup I recommend stop the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acrobat Assistant 8.0] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe"
// preload acrobat reader and set taskbar icon

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
// preload quicktime (used by itunes and standalone)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
// check update java virtual machine monthly

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe
// useless bloatware for dial up connection (From lenovo)

don't know them, stop at your own risk:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded /nodetect

You can preserve or delete de following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn GUI] "C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exe"
*** your remote access

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAXPnP] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAX] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\Smax4.exe /tray
*** sound

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TVT Scheduler Proxy] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\Scheduler\scheduler_proxy.exe
*** lenovo system update
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TpShocks] TpShocks.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPFNF7] C:\Program Files\Lenovo\NPDIRECT\TPFNF7SP.exe /r

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cssauth] "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\cssauth.exe" silent
*** security (not fingerprinter) stop if you don't use

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BLOG] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\BatLogEx.DLL,StartBattLog
*** battery indicator in taskbar
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AwaySch] C:\Program Files\Lenovo\AwayTask\AwaySch.EXE
*** don't know

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AMSG] C:\Program Files\ThinkVantage\AMSG\Amsg.exe /startup
*** message center. stop them.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ACWLIcon] C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\ACWLIcon.exe

Your assumed cause and effect relationship is flawed and appears to be skewing your asseessment of the real issue.

There is no essentially "good" or "bad" number of processes.

Yes, it sounds to me like you are going about this the wrong way.

There is no reason why 100 processes, or more should cause problems, especially if you have updated software and 2 gigs or more of ram. I nearly always run much more than 100 processes on my XP SP3 and my system is extremely stable.

CPU utilitization and memory usage are the main limiting factors. The commit charge (Performance Tab on Windows Task Manager) should be less than physical memory for best performance.

The "erratic behavior, slowness, apps crashing" sounds more like a virus, old version of norton antivirus, or corrupt application or something.

Good luck in getting it resolved.

I'm developer and run much software. Usually more than 10 windows and several instances of browsers with multiple tabs. XP comes with 40 to 60 process by default (it varies because drivers can have their own processes - sound, mouse, touchpad, fingerprinter, and more-). I can't imagine why a user "Joe the plumber" can have 30 processes over default installation.

If you see his log, there are 33 processes from his HP device (printer/scanner, I don't know). That's not well. Something is wrong there.

Processes uses memory and slow windows start and login. If you have enough resources, no problems must be expected. If they aren't in use then virtual memory is used, so no matter in performance, anyways a working process affect the performance (check for % of cpu usage).

I'm now on vista with 104 processes and this have no issues.
