SATA HDD in a22p?

#1 Post by phr » Sun Nov 09, 2008 1:40 am

I wonder if there is a way to do this, maybe by modding an ultrabay slim sata hdd tray. I understand that those adapters have a SATA to PATA bridge chip inside. Unfortunately they don't fit into the a22p's ultrabay 2000 slot unmodified. Alternatively, is there an ultrabay 2000 sata tray that can work in the a22p directly?

newegg has 500gb samsung sata 2.5" drives for $110 shipped this weekend, and it's hard to resist.

There are adapters like these on ebay. Though I have no personal experience with these nor do I endorse the seller I linked to.

Cool. The posted link item is not there anymore, but a simple search for "ultrabay sata" gave me one for $34.99 shipped (non-genuine). Much cheaper than Newegg's $49.99+shipping (though, genuine). I rarely buy from eBay, but I couldn't resist.

This will be exactly what I need for my now-homeless 60GB Travelstar, after I bought a WD Scorpio 320GB 7200 rpm for $90 shipped on Newegg. I know this is not as spacious as the Samsung 500GB mentioned, but I wanted something FASTER. 320GB and 7200 is as big AND fast as you can get.

I was initially tempted to setup a Vista/Ubuntu/Hackintosh system, but I think I'll keep to my normal Vista/Ubuntu with a LOT of extra storage space.

Hmm, I don't see any Ultrabay 2000 - SATA adapter on newegg. Any other sources? I'd rather buy new stuff from a serious retailer even if it's a few bucks more than ebay.

Here's the link to Newegg's SATA Ultra Bay adapter.

As an update, I've received my eBay order in reasonable time and have tested it to work perfectly with the hard drive I pulled out of my x60 and my x6 docking base.

FYI, this one is not Ultrabay 2000 compatible.

How loud is the WD compared to the Seagate? Does it CLICK? WHat is the model number?

Edit: I cannot find a 320GB 7200RPM PATA drive from WD. I do not think it exists. Are you sure you are posting on the right thread? Can you send a link to it?

OK so it seems you are working with an X60 and yet posting in a thread about an A22p? Why on earth confuse so many thinkpad users that are not necessarily aware of all the differences between the various Ultrabays and hard drive types.

First of all the A22 uses a PATA interface. SATA was not invented yet. Second, it uses Ultrabay 2000 not Ultrabay Slim like your X60.

To the OP,
To my knowledge there is no IBM or Lenovo part that allows using a SATA drive in an UltraBay 2000 or Ultra Bay Plus slot. If one exists, it will be aftermarket. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0310973542
That one looks like it would work. It has the correct connectors anyway. Beyond that I don't know.

Oops, I am sorry. I had to do a lot of research recently myself on the differences of Ultrabay, and confused myself over looking through so much at once. Hereare the differences and compatibility for anyone's reference.

Also, the 320GB drive I got was not PATA. I, too, think a 320GB 7200RPM PATA drive from WD does not exist. I originally thought you were looking for a deal on a SATA drive. My fault again.

I guess my experience with the hardware I have cannot be of any help to you afterall :(

Well I just got sucked right in. I was so excited there was a 7200RPM PATA drive available I was searching all over for it without even finishing the thread! Oh well. I wouldn't have mentioned it but I have seen lots of people buy the wrong part.
