Not sure what you intend to do with the A31p donor machine but selling its LCD should bring in some money, no?

The donor machine is for sale, but the original donor is going to get the proceeds from the sale. That is the only fair way to do this since we didn't actually use it for a project build.

Continuing on with getting Vista on the T61 project machine. I did some research on this machine. The EBay auction stated that the machine type is 7659-1QU. The machine we actually received is 7659-1LU. The later takes Win Vista Business 64bit as part of it's standard config, the prior runs Win Vista Business 32bit. So, in order to stay true to the config we'd need Win Vista Business 64bit recovery media. I am not sure how R&R works at that level. Can we use either successfully or only what is on the COA?

If anybody is a Tech Net subscriber, perhaps they could provide a 64 bit biz DVD. I think that would be legal as long as the OS was offered no charge. I might be mistaken. My 64 bit T60 works well with all of my apps. (I don't use anything exotic - Just Office 2007 I a couple other things)

mgo, good idea. If anyone out there is a Technet subscriber or who can send/lend/borrow a set of Win Vista Bus., 64bit RR discs for a T61...we need a set please. I will mention your member ID (or name if you prefer) with the utmost respect & admiration in this thread :).

Does the COA sticker specify 32 or 64bit?
I can probably find a 32bit set for an R61 if it is close enough to work. I'll have to check my stash of R&R disc sets at work.

carbon_unit, good question. I can't make out the top part of the COA sticker because it is worn. The COA # is perfectly legible though. If the Lenovo support site were up, I could check history. Its a 7659-1LU.

I used 64-bit for a short time. Many "normal" things don't work right. Windows update failed with 4GB of memory. Many little applications I use just didn't work. I only suggest it for people who absolutely need it to get more than 4GB memory for things like huge pictures with photoshop or video editing.

richk, for the purposes of this project, I absolutely have no preference for a 64Bit Vista install. My earlier statement about staying true to the config was simply leading to this. If the COA on the bottom of the machine is for Vista Business 64bit, would a Vista 32bit R&R disc set recover the machine, and if it did, is that action against any Microsoft Software License terms? For the purposes of general sale, I would agree with the argument that a 32bit OS might sell better. I can't comment about Vista 64bit operation issues because I have never run it.

Well, the Lenovo support site finially came back up. I did a waranty/parts lookup and it does not mention the OS. The machine type/model description says;

Product: ThinkPad T61 7659-1LU [change]
Operating system: Windows Vista [change]

Original description: T7100(1.8GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 4c Li-Ion, WinVista Business

What made me believe it was a Vista Business 64bit model is this;

http://www.superwarehouse.com/Lenovo_Th ... /p/1504114

... and this

http://shopper.cnet.com/notebooks/lenov ... iew#info-1

Thoughts? I will also ask a Lenovo Rep to do a lookup.

Harry, if you do a "warranty status", then a "parts lookup" at lenovo.com, you'll probably see the Vista type, my T61 shows;

VISTA BUSINESS 32 BIT ALL WW:LABELS

underclocker, it shows the below;

LABELS; MS WINDOWS VISTA PREMIUM LOGO:LA

So, that would contradict what is listed when you look-up the machine type/serial;

Original description: T7100(1.8GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 4c Li-Ion, WinVista Business

The sticker on the palm rest just says 'Windows Vista'.

A search for the DVD recovery set 87H4776 listed in your parts lookup reveals Windows Vista Business 32bit here.

Brad, that was a stroke of genious, thanks!. So if anyone (carbon_unit ?) has a Vista Business 32 bit R&R set and you are willing to send a copy, please let me know.

Update - I opened a repair ticket with Lenovo for the keyboard.

I'll look when I get to work tomorrow. I know I have R61 Vista Ultimate 32bit (it belongs to the machine I am typing on) and I am pretty sure I have R61 Vista Business 32bit.

Project Fund Update -

We did receive a refund from Superior Reball today in the amount of $33.

Carry-over balance $29.12
Payment from SR $33.00
Current Balance $61.12

Since it is fairly apparent at this point that we will not be receiving a donated or substantially price reduced LCD offer, I will purchase an LCD using the current balance $63.12 and the rest of the LCD cost will be out of my pocket. I will report the total amount here, and upon sale of the laptop I will recoup my personal expenditure. Hopefully that plan meets with approval from the membership. I would flat out donate the money under normal circumstances, but I have already donated well over $100 into these projects.

I feel like the Puerto Rico Representative to the US Congress (able to speak, but with no vote/power).

In that capacity, Harryc: you have my go ahead to proceed as you stated.

On a lighter note, I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1, 64bit.. My 4 GB of RAM and I have seen no problems whatsoever. Just saw some mention of this above and thought I'd chime in.

Cut and paste this search into EBay -

(42T0339,42T0341,42T0425,13N7102,42T0410)

As you can see, the lowest priced LCD is now $131 shipped. That is $33 higher than a couple of days ago...perhaps we'll wait for a better deal, unless someone has a source?

Edit: Disregard - I found one -

usernotabuser, thanks.

Done, we've now purchased this LCD -

LCD on EBay

They do standard flat rate shipping, so now we wait. Current project fund accounting looks like this -

Carry-over balance $29.12
Payment from SR $33.00
Old Balance $61.12
LCD Purchase $ 97.98
Current Balance - $36.86 (Negative)

Amount owed to Harryc on sale of laptop - $36.86

Amount invested to date on T61 Project -

Laptop $263.78
Battery/AC Adapter $25.00
LCD $97.98
Total $ 386.76

As far as investment in the project, I think that is an outstanding value, and we're basicallly done as far as getting needed parts etc. So, we've accomplished getting a T61 with 2 years warranty for under $400. I still have yet to post pics. I will make it a point to do that tonight.

Harry, do you have another T61(p) or even T60(p) hanging around? If so, can you try using the Vista Business 32b R&R DVDs in that machine with the hard drive from the project T61? I have use this method before and it works just as good. This way at least you can get the R&R partition on the project hard drive. Then run R&R after putting back the hard drive in the project T61.

LCD Tech must have changed shipping policies at some point. The LCD is already enroute via 2 day FEDEX. It will be here on Wednesday from Texas. Now THAT is what I call service. Coincidentally, the keyboard will be here the same day.

It's coming together nicely! Please post a picture link when you get a chance. It'd be good to see the before and after (LCD swap).

What I use, in increasing amounts of "toxicity":

- clear Scotch tape, pressed onto the sticky parts and then pulled straight up. Repeat as fast you can, moving the clear tape to unused sections when the tape loses tackiness.
- Windex
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Goo Gone

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (extra strength) did wonders (with patience and warm water) on the lid of my T43...

Ray, the first (3) items have already been used to remove most of it, the remaining residue is tough. I do have a can of Goo Gone. That stuff is nasty :). Do you think it would discolor the lid? George, Mr. Clean Magic eraser was the first thing I used. I didn't try the extra strength though.

Haven't had to resort to the Goo Gone yet so I don't know how/if it will attack the lid. Try some along the back edge and see if it starts eating the plastic :) .

Yeah, Ray that stuff would eat rust off of nails. I think it would be a last resort. I will try to locate an extra strength MC Magic eraser first.
