Well, Harry, magic eraser was your suggestion to me a couple of weeks ago...

Now, knowing the horrible shape (regarding sticker residue as in 70% of the lid being covered with it) of my T43 I bought a two-pack of extra strength ones and spent something like four hours rubbing the poor thing until I was half-blind...

It hasn't removed everything, but majority of it is gone, mostly without trace...a nice exercise for those amongst us who are not keen on going to gym...

Isopropyl alcohol always does the trick for me (its just a matter of how long it takes)

I wanted to reiterate the scotch tape method. Depending one the surface, it should be slowly lifted off, or pulled off as quickly as possible. (slowly, in this case)

However...there is a possibly ultimate solution to this. It's called "Adhesive Tape Remover Pads" and unlike Goo Gone, has a different chemical method of removal.

They look like alcohol pads, and are often in stock at dermatology offices for removing tape from stupid kids, or EKG pads after tests.

There are two kinds, one that has mineral oil as a base, which I don't recommend, as it might stain the surface. (However, it's sometimes useful for the purpose at hand on totally non-porous surfaces like metal) The other has a totally chemical makeup. This second kind will totally evaporate like alcohol, and leave no stains.

Triad is a common brand of the oil based version (avoid), and PDI (chemical) is the brand I have positive experiences with. You might be able to ask for a few at a doctor's office, or buy/order some from the net or a pharmacy/surgical supply store.

Remember, although I mentioned chemicals, both are meant to be used on the skin, so they are safe to handle.

Could you clone your own T61 Vista HD and change the Windows key to match the COA?
Or use the COA from the Restore CDs if you can find that?

Alternatively, how about making Restore CDs from your own T61 Vista?

Hello all I have both Win Vista Business 32bit and 64bit I got with my T61. I have never use them but I can try and make a copy for you. Let me know witch one you want.

As to removing sticker residue, I use a plastic bottle of Goo Gone (with Citrus power), and have used it on every single T23 and T30 that I ever own(ed). I've used it on both plastics (like palmrest) and rubberized lids and bottoms, even on LCDs!
It does not leave any traces/marks and removes everything.
It even takes away loads of small scratches off the rubberized T23/T30 lids.
As a side remark: I always clean the WHOLE surfaces, not just the goo-spots, to avoid signs of using it.

Now, I don't know for sure that Goo Gone has enough solvents to do significant damage to the coating, but the last sentence of your post leads me to believe you are taking a layer off of it. In general, if you were to clean a surface well, and only remove a foreign substance, then there should be no spot unless the rest of the surface is dirty as well.

I have sold several TPs to forum members here, including George (ajkula66), who has seen 100s of TPs going through his hands.
Perhaps he would care to comment on the status of the T23 he got from me, which was a good representative of the way I deliver 'my' goods.

I can't see any detrimental effect anywhere by using this Goo Gone.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to defend/promote this substance, but I am convinced it does no harm whatsoever to a TP.

Isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol just does not cut it, other than to remove thermal paste from a CPU.

It's not that new. I submitted that in the sticker goo thread years ago.
I have used WD-40 on some T23's and it removed the sticker goo easily. After that I cleaned them all over with Simple Green to get rid of the WD-40 smell. Then I used some rubbing alcohol on the screen and they were clean.

That was one gorgeous machine and if Goo Gone was used on it, I wouldn't have guessed it in this lifetime...

T61 Project Update - The new keyboard is a 42T3143 (U.S. English - NMB).

T61 Project Update - the battery, AC adapter, and LCD (LG LP141WX3 (TL)(N1)) arrived today. All parts are now in-house for this build.

Edit: The LG LP141WX3 (TL)(N1) is a Glossy 200nit High-Brite 14.1" WXGA TFT LCD.

So, this T61 will have a glossy screen. Well, if a T41 with an R51 Intel board is a TR41, then a Thinkpad T61 with an Acer LCD is a 'Thinker'

I am pretty sure that is a more valuable and usually more expensive LCD - brighter and glossy. Very good luck.

It's not too much of a Frankenpad since that was an option with CTO models.

I don't think the inverter will be an issue since they didn't seem to be cross-referenced for LCD type in the HMM.

You can usually replace the panel without removing the LCD assembly but it can be a bit harder.

Quite true, but it takes a level of dexterity (and willingness to assume risk) that the HMM doesn't assume all technicians have (or can afford). For the project, the safe way may be the best way.

However, "Shortcut LCD Swap" would be a nice thread. I've done a shortcut swap a couple of times on the T4x line. It saves a significant amont of time.

P.S. Harry, what's the latest?! I'm looking forward to seeing that T61 with a bright, glossy LCD.

Here you go Ed -
The procedure was mostly uneventful. I will post the actual repair pics in the previous post later on today or tonight. Thoughts on pricing? The battery is almost at 100 of new capacity by the way. 76 cycles. It has an NMB keyboard. Vista Business is loaded and the R&R partition is intact. This is the brightest LCD I have ever seen on a Thinkpad. You can see my hands holding the camera on the glossy screen. I'll be able to compare it to a LED lit T400 on Monday, side by side.

Beautiful. I know I'm in the minority, but I love bright glossy screens.

I wish my TP had an XBRITE type WSXGA. (Which doesn't seem to exist)
