Memory Upgrade from 1GB to 2GB - but only 512MB recognized!

#1 Post by flassen » Mon Nov 10, 2008 5:55 am

Hi,

i have a strange phenomenon. I purchased a Kingston KTM-TP3840/1G RAM in addition to the default memory module (Hynix 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-4200S-444-12).

If I insert just one (in either bay - extra or below the keyboard) - 1GB is recognised. If I insert both, the system (BIOS, Windows, Ubuntu) only recognise 512MB. I have swapped them around, to no effect - there are no warning sounds, memtest runs smoothly. I have upgraded to latest BIOS and all.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance + best regards,

Fredrik

The do not like each other. If possible, try to sell your old memory module and buy the second new one (the same one as you bought already).

First, you really should tell us what type of ThinkPad you have? Since you post here in the T4x forum I guess it is a T40/41/42/43 with a T43 being most likely owing to what you say about "PC4200". People have reported similar troubles before; see the thread What RAM for T42 ? Tried some, but they didn't work :-(. Also, the thread T42 might be of interest. - what variation in RAM specs can you use?.

And, ooh, by the way: Welcome to the forum! :-)

A long shot, but do you happen to have trouble hibernating with the RAM installed as well? That said, I do find it more likely that you have a damaged or incompatible stick of RAM.
