Software causing L shape darker spot on monitor

#1 Post by usernotabuser » Thu Nov 13, 2008 3:28 pm

So, I recently purchased the following laptop configuration and I'm having an issue with a shadow appearing on the screen and not refreshing away. Let me attempt to explain the situation as best I can.

Upon startup the lenovo software "searches" for a wireless signal and a popup box appears notifying you of the search. The effect in question seems similar to the one in windows XP that allows you to "improve" the visual appeal of windows by placing shadows "under" menus (found under display properties --> Appearance tab --> Effects button ---> show shadows under menus).

Anyway, the window appears and the shadow under the right and bottom edges of the window DOES NOT go away when the window is closed. I think this is not an hardware issue in the monitor due to the fact that when windows is shutting down or booting up the darker reverse L shape is not there.

Is this a setting in Hydravision, Access IBM, or the Thinkvantage software that I've somehow set in conflict to each other? I have an identical laptop here that is not exhibiting the same behavior, but it has not received the latest bios updates and such either.

Once again, I think this is software based, and I'm just missing something.

SETUP:
Pentium M 735 (1.7 GHz ”Dothan” with low-power ”SpeedStep” technology)
512 MB RAM
40 GB 5400 rpm harddisk
15” SXGA+ (1400x1050 pixels, format 4:3) FlexView/IPS TFT LCD
ATI Radeon 9600 GPU with 64 MB VRAM (will also work with Vista)
CD-RW/DVD (24x24x24x/8x)
IBM 802.11 b/g wireless (MPCI) (Atheros!)
Modem (CDC)
1 Gb Ethernet (LOM)
UltraNav
Secure Chip
6 cell Li-Ion battery
WinXP Pro
Simple is as simple does.

Since you mentioned HydraVision, have you disabled its shadow support?

I don't have access to any of my T42's right now, but, IIRC, there's a setting in Access Connections that lets you turn off that popup box.

This does not sound like a hardware problem at all.

First place to check is Access connections. Sure uncheck the popup boxes and see if that fixes it.

Personally, I'm of the camp that likes to leave access connections off of my thinkpads in any case.

If you feel the same way, download the correct driver for your wireless device, then uninstall access connections along with the driver. Restart and install the driver alone. I think that's how I did it.

Turning of shadowing in Hydravision did the trick. I thought I had tried that before but I suppose I had missed it somehow.

Thanks All.
