Blue screen after setting ext. monitor as primary

#1 Post by martin_f » Fri Nov 14, 2008 8:31 am

Hi, Im a newbie here :-) searched the forum, didn't find similar topic though, so here is what's making me sad these days:

I got a new LCD external monitor (Lenovo L220x). This was the first one to ever attach to my laptop. I attached it, turned on and (without installing any monitor or graphic card (GC) drivers) I extended the desktop onto the external monitor. It worked, I set up the native resolution and it worked. Problem was the position - default position is external monitor is located to the right of the laptop, which is not what I need. That's where my troubles started.

I tried to set my external monitor as the primary one - blue screen appears. (link to photo http://is.muni.cz/www/143508/DSCN1464.jpg - its in Czech, but basic info should be understandable. If needed I can translate any part of it) I try to change the position of laptop display and external monitor in "Presentation and display schemes" (Fn + F7): the listbox listing available resolutions for external monitor (even with EM drivers installed) contains less options than in reality the monitor is capable of. The last one is 1600 x YYYY, whereas the native (actually set in windows display dialog) is 1900 x YYYY. I click the "TEST" button - blue screen apears.

My following steps:
- first I had default GC drivers from Intel sigend in 2006. so I downloaded and installed new one, signed 2/15/2008. After installing external monitor (EM) driver and rebooting - problem remained
- I was told to download the most recent GC driver from lenovo support. I found one - yet with the same Driver version no. - 6.14.10.4926. I installed it anyway - the problem remained.

INFO:
Driver info:
from INTEL website:
* Driver Revision: Production Version 14.32.4
* Package: 45665
*
* Graphics: 6.14.10.4926
* HDMI Audio: 5.10.0.1030

from LENOVO website:
* Driver Revision: Production Version 14.32.4
* Package: 45357
*
* Graphics: 6.14.10.4926
* HDMI Audio: 5.10.0.1030

My laptop info:
ThinkPad R60, type 9456-HTG, Win XP Professional SP2, 2GB RAM, Intel Core2 CPU - T5500 @ 1.66 GHz
Graphic card: Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family

I just learned it was not possible to upgrade my integrated video card in any way. So it looks like if I cant work around this problem using proper SW, I'm *****...

Any help/ideas appreciated. Thx

nice problem detail...

try a few things... first for the kick of it, reduce the acceleration on the video card to see impact... you find this under Display properties/ advanced/ Troubleshooting... lower to 0, restart and test... if it works, then gradually move lever up and try.
if no go, then
because this multimonitor function in all ibms are probably controlled by ibm software, make sure there is no obvious active software conflicts: using msconfig, go to selective startup and disable all startup items, restart and test.

hey, could i bother you for your R60 restore cd/s ... i have an R60e and my ThinkVantage partition is corrupt... not able to boot @ all...

hi, changing the acceleration on the video card didnt help. after setting it to 0, I couldnt even start the Presentation scheme menu by pressing Fn+F7. It went blue immediately.

Since theres win32k.sys mentioned in the error report, I'll try to find something there...

ad Restore CD - its not my computer. My emplyer gave it to me, Ill ask him for those CDs, if I ound out anything, will let you know..
