Clicking noise coming from new unplugged AC adapter for R32.

#1 Post by rhz » Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:39 pm

Hi.

I recently bought a replacement AC adapter for my R32 on ebay. The adapter makes a quite audible clicking noise when plugged into the wall. Interestingly, this noise disappears when I actually connect my laptop to the power supply. That is, the noise is only present when the adapter is plugged into the wall, but not connected to my computer.

Is such an adapter dangerous? I'm tempted to return it, but the cost of shipping the adapter back exceeds what I paid for it.

Thanks.

Rhz

Replace it.

That's internal arcing within the power supply. Do not use it unless you have it on the desk and visible and handy to touch for heat. Kinda warm is OK, hot to the touch is bad.

Arcing will break down the insulation and damage components.

When you are done using the computer unplug the brick from the wall and from the computer.

Buy another. It's cheaper than a house!

cheap or ill-treated (dropped on the floor etc) switched power supplies have the tendency to click when not under load especially...
its not worth repairing - buy a ORIGINAL one...
