T61P and Warranty for a cracked screen

#1 Post by iamdmc » Tue Nov 18, 2008 11:38 pm

My friend has a T61P which which she had a little accident. She slipped on some ice or a slippery surface and though she broke her fall with her left hand, her right hand (or rather the left corner of the Thinkpad) also took a bit of the impact. The Thinkpad was in a neoprene zippered sleeve at the time.

Now there is a hairline crack from the top left corner diagonally through to the bottom-middle portion of the screen. There is some slight bleed, but nothing major. There are no other problems with the laptop.

The machine does have a 3 year warranty attached to it, but not accidental warranty. My question is this: If my friend purchased the accidental warranty from Lenovo for ~$150 as an upgrade to her existing warranty, could she claim this accident and get the laptop fixed by Lenovo for free (ie screen replacement)? Or is she completely out of luck and will I have to find her a new WUXGA screen (at least $250 + shipping)?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that you can add accidental damage protection mid-way through three year warranty...I'm fairly certain it's got to be done within the first year.

Costs you nothing to call Lenovo and give it a shot...worst case scenario she's out the money for a new LCD...

Now, the ethical implications of the whole thing are a whole another ballgame...

Good luck.

I should have mentioned that the laptop is less than 6 months old so I believe you can still purchase the extra warranty (That's what I did with my X61s - on the day my warranty expired no less)

Is this really an ethical question or just plain insurance fraud?

Folks, this is a really bad idea for a topic of discussion on this forum. I won't allow discussion of ways to beat the Lenovo Warranty here. Thread locked.
