Help needed: Disassembling T40 lcd Complete Unit

#1 Post by smith07031 » Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:24 am

Hi, need help in replacing lcd assembly on T40 thinkpad. I aquired a complete lcd unit for this model complete with hinges and cable.
I want to take out the old lcd unit(replace complete assembly, not just disassemble the lcd and fix it that way)
I have seen the hardware manual, a little confusing.
Do I have to take off the complete palmrest/aka keyboard bezel in order to accomplish this? If not, exactly what screws do I take off to
replace the complete lcd assembly complete with hinges?
I was told that with the T40, this job is much easier then with the T30 thinkpad(which required removing the entire palmrest)
Any help from you guys who have actually done this would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks very much. :D

you have to remove both the palmrest ant the bezel surrounding the keyboard
"difficulty level" its the same as in T30's case
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

Please take a look at the link below(copy and paste if necessary)
Does the 2nd pic down describing the fan removal/ palmrest removal
illustration look like all the correct screws to remove on the t40 laptop
(all on bottom , screws w red and yellow colors(12 in all)?
Thanks for your assistance.

Robert,

Try see T4x_screw_types by forum-member poshgeordie; the part "5. LCD Display Assembly (pages 118 - 120)" - it may help? I assume that you are not going to open up the LCD assembly itself - but if so, pay attention to the advice mentioned in the thread How hard is DIY replace a LCD screen on T42p.. (see the post of Wed Jul 09, 2008 3:16 pm).

Hi thanks for your help. The pdf screw types are good pics, so you remove the keyboard, then the 8 from the palmrest, then 2 more from keyboard bezel(which I thought was same as palmrest) then 2 m2x19, then 2 m2x4 screws not to mention the screws on the bottom of laptop? 14 screws in all to remove palmrest? The rest of screws by the hinges I already know.
Too bad the ibm movies for this have been 'removed'
Thank you
ROBERT
