Expecting a Rebate??... NOT SO FAST, L'IL FELLA!

#1 Post by olex126 » Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:28 pm

Hi Group.

(Mod, if you know of a better forum to post this, please move.)

Don't know how many of you have seen the following story,

http://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/sto ... ily66.html

but the nut of it is this:

Continental Promotions Group and its' affiliate groups have filed for bankruptcy, basically owing up to $10 million in rebates to consumers.

Here are the companies I've been able to locate using Continental Promotion Group: Forum members might particularly notice the companies highlighted in bold:

Cingular/AT&T, Canon, Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics, Staples, Logitech, Kensington, Hewlett Packard, Crucial, AVG, Nero, Panda AV, Smith Micro/Allume, Advance Auto Parts, Dell, Lowe's, Amazon, Sharp Electronics, Home Depot, Gateway, eMachines, Kragen Auto Parts, Tom Tom

...along with Costco and TRENDnet.

The bankruptcy filing took place effective November 14, 2008. Effectively, any rebate checks issued before November 14 2008, or owed but not yet received, are toast. If cashed, they will be returned dishonored.

Costco has already issued a notice to take any non-cashable rebate checks to their local store where the customer will be re-imbursed. I don't know how other individual retailers or chains will handle the situation. Some may honor the rebates, but then again others may just say "It sure sucks to be you today, now doesn't it?"

I would suggest you backtrack all rebate receipts and check on their status.

Regards.

Dave

Do you have a link to this:

That explains the email I got from Costco the other day. Thx.

BTW: does anybody know how long after a check has been cashed, it can be returned/dishonored?

Off Topic seems the most appropriate place, hence I've moved it here.

My Corsair and Crucial rebates appear to be with "Helgeson Enterprises, Inc" and "Velocity Fulfillment, Inc." so I shouldn't be affected. The only companies filing bankruptcy are "CPG Marketing Inc. and Continental Promotion Group Inc."

This reminds me of the whole Sharper Image collapse that left the gift card holders high and dry. I mailed my Fry's rebate on the 13th so it will be safe if it's one of the affected one, luckily.

I got my Crucial SODIMM rebate checks already and cashed it too.
The Crucial rebate is from Crucial, not continental promote group.

Received my Crucial rebate today under the Lexar name (both divisions of Micron) so it looks like those rebates are safe from the recent demise of CPG.

New articles on the bankruptcy

#10 Post by Mike Blake » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:07 pm

Statement From Continental Promotion Group
Continental Promotion Group, Inc. is a third party administrator of consumer rebate and other promotions for retailers and manufacturers nationwide.

On Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, both Continental Promotion Group, Inc. and its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Unfortunately, CPG is not immune to the economic problems facing many companies across all industries during these unprecedented times.

The bankruptcy filing will allow CPG to restructure its business while continuing to provide services to both new and existing customers during the restructuring period, and we anticipate emerging from Chapter 11 with the assistance of counsel, our clients and the court that supervises this process. We are working with our clients to the extent possible to assist with the honoring of consumer rebate checks outstanding prior to the bankruptcy filing or providing alternate direction to consumers.

Kevin M. Iurato
General Counsel

Yep, me too. Took about 5 weeks. Certainly can't complain about that.
