Win2k or Linux

#1 Post by i-SnipeZ » Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:03 pm

Ive been having touble deciding what to make my laptop run on. Right now i have been using Win2k and find it to be very likable but i also love Mandriva Linux 2009, and frankly, there is one thing that has kept me undecided and thats video editing software and heat. (Linux makes my thinkpad hellish) So im just trying to figure out what to use, some of you will say dual boot but i refuse to do that as i can barely live w/ a 120 gb HDD (320gb drives even press me a little)

I tried Linux (Suse) and I was impressed with later versions. However, Suse refused to reconise Bluetooth devices; mobile phone, and mouse.

Wind XP recognises all Bluetooth devices.

Maybe it is a general manufacturer problem that their products are only for Windoze or Mac.

Sad, but until Linux instantly copes with all hardware then, for me, it is no contest.

Mandriva is nice (actually the only distro that work with my wifi card out of the box, but that´s another topic...)! And so are Ubuntu and Suse! If XP (or Vista) isn´t an option, I wouldn´t hesitate to pick Linux :D However, I cannot comment on the video editing part as I don´t have any experience with that.

Just download some Live images and try the distros.
I personally recommend openSUSE with GNOME. With the newest kernel almost everything works out of the box for me.
Check www.thinkwiki.com - there is a compatibility chart for every ThinkPad model.
If you miss your favorite windows software you can always try running it through WINE - a windows API emulator.
If you had a faster processor another option would have been installing both windows and linux, one as a host and one as a virtual machine.

I would rather install windows 95 than run the most KDE-advanced distro out there in Gnome ;)

Cheers
