Yes to both...
But I had a slight problem... I think the lcd cable was faulty and it messed up the mother baord somehow, and now I get no power to the inverter ...
Its not the inverter or the lcd itself tested them on a few machines...
And on another t60... and worked fine at first then I just moved the screen and now I have the same problem on that machine too .. gonna have to get them sorted out from lenovo....

Strange problem though... must have took out a small component on the board or something...

I am "slightly" lost. Do you mind posting a short HOW TO with steps & components that you used. I am guessing you finally DID HAVE SUCCESS in getting all this work PROPERLY.

The only thing you really have to do is disconnect a pin from the board.
Its the 2nd pin on.. on the jae connecter.
you will have to flip the driver board over to do this..

they are applying it to an hitachi panel...

Other than that I have just used the standard t60 cable and inverter.. was a standard xga model.
I didn't need to reprogram the spd it worked as it was..

Heh, [censored] i feel bad for recommending the EDID reflash now. This project i think concludes that it makes no sense whatsoever that Lenovo has this blacklist for 15" LCD systems at all.
I'm glad to hear you finally found and got a new UXGA LCD, and that it worked "just" by following the pin-cut modification... wonder what really is wrong with the UXGA panel you had from the beginning.

No its just the luck of the draw that the sharp works as it does.. the other panel I had does not follow suit.
I also have an hitachi sxga panel working fine in other non t60 thinkpads but not in the t60 due to edid issue..

I've gone through that page several times with the Chinese to English conversion but it was never clear enough or gave me enough confidence.

So you're saying you only did 2 major things:
- Screen Replacement - Using which Hitachi or Sharp LCD? Model?
- Pin modification - Care to outline / detail it a little more since I cannot grasp the other Chinese link

I have a used Sharp UXGA that is what I want to try it with.

So you're saying the Sharp is the only UXGA one that works while the Hitachi UXGA does not.

The sharp is the one I could get working.
Ran into some problems with the hitachi..
The model of the screen is Sharp LQ141U1LH02 14.1 LCD UXGA

The thing with the pins is very easy, you have pin 1 and 2, and on the ibm/ lenovo machines these are split into pwr and gnd...
But on dell machines they are both gnd...
Also on the 15" machines both companies seem to adopt the same wiring.. thats why no one has had any problems when trying a uxga mod on the 14" t4x series...

I tried with out any mods with the panel on the t60 and it killed the motherboard..
So I basically just disconnected the pin.. u can lift it or cut it and it shud be fine..

I hope that explains it... if not get back to me..

Upgrading a T60P from SXGA to UXGA:

HI xyz (or anyone else who can answer these questions), congrats on your successful modification, I am trying to do exacty the same mod and, if you (or anyone else) don't mind answering a few questions, it would be greatly appreciated. I have a brand new, totally bare Sharp LQ141U1LH02 14.1 LCD that I would like to put into a T60P. You say this worked for you but:

1) was this a new panel, or a pull with an inverter, backlight etc included, and if so, from what make/model laptop

2) the lcd connector pin you talk about disconnecting - is it on the lcd panel or a chip on the panel, or is it on the video cable connector or where the connector plugs into the video card. Also these pins are so small, did you use some special extraction tool?

3) did you simply switch all the SXGA lcd hardware (inverter, cable, etc) over to the Sharp LQ141U1LH02, or did you have to replace all these components to upgrade them to UXGA.

4) I got a hold of the Sharp LQ141U1LH02 spec sheet (http://members.lycos.co.uk/eleewhmaus/comp/) and pin 2 is not ground, it is Vcc 3.3V, which adds to the confusion.

Any help or advice you. or anyone in the forum, could offer would be really appreciated, although this is a pretty old post of xyz's, I'm hoping people are still reading or, ideally, someone else who had done the same mod is reading it and can help. Thanks

1) was a used panel just the panel

2) the pin i dissconnected was on the panel.
I just lifted the pin... I'm very good with a soldeing iron so it seemed quite a big pin to me.

3) I used all the previous hardware for the lcd ... in my case was xga.

4)I stand corrected ..
on the 'lenovo' panels pin 1 and 2 are not connected .... so i disconnected the pin
having powered on a mboard with a panel with these pins connected has resulted in me frying the mpther board.

Do you think the same mod would work in a T61p 14.1" 4:3 non-widescreen w/ FX570 GPU? I really don't want to fry my mobo. I've done that too many times making stupid mistakes with QXGA mods. Been there (3 times).

It should do..
You just have to cut that pin
On the lenovo lcds. pins 1 and 2 are not connected on these 14" uxga panels they are .. as that is what the dell machines use

Hello xyz, I really hope you are still reading this forum after your lcd panel conversion success. You said that you simply bought a 14.1 Inch Sharp LQ141U1LH02 UXGA and by "disconnecting" pin #2 on (lcd?), which is a redundant ground that shorted out and fried the motherboard if it was left connected. Other than that, you say you just dropped in the panel with no reprogramming of chips, with no other changes and it worked. Is it possible that your panel was already programmed or modded for Lenovo, so you needed no new UXGA inverter, no new cables, no reprogramming of chip, if any on lcd panel.
Because you see, following your lead, I have bought a brand new bare Sharp LQ141U1LH02 UXGA, so obviously it will not contain any Lenovo info or programming on board - so, am I not going to have to reprogram the chip for Lenovo UXGA, buy a UXGA inverter, cable and also do something about the short circuit problem?
xyz, I hope you're still reading this forum or anyone who has any experience with this, any advice would be kindly appreciated. Otherwise, I have just bought an expensive UXGA paperweight.

I've been looking at my 15.0 QXGA panel and my newly acquired Lenovo 14.1" T61p 4:3 non-widescreen notebook. I bought this computer to swap the mobo into a T60p 15.0" notebook along with my panel. The QXGA panel will work with these motherboards as it has been done before by others, so it's mostly a matter of minimizing the edged just a little and fitting it into the lid.

I'm thinking how it'd be possible to mod it so that it'd fit in the 14.1 T61p non-wide. The metal rim around the display panel seems mostly plastic shock absorption. I'd would first experiment minimizing the frame around a broken 15.0 panel before I attempted on a good one.

It'd require other mods if you could downsize it which by looking at it appears possible, mods such as the inverter relocation and relocation of the antennas, a frame mod, etc. I've been looking at it for about half an hour thinking how the size is there. I like the smaller form factor of the 14.1" 4:3 notebook over the 15.0" 4:3 notebook.

Success as far as I can tell is whether or not it is possible to remove a few mm off the sides, looks like it's possible by looking at the rear of the panel.

Has anybody taken apart a notebook panel?

The QXGA LCD with the 15.0" T60/p is already a fit which makes no room in excess. I still think you'll need to re-program the EDID to make it work on a T60p motherboard at least.
The metal frame works as protection for the LCD coloumn and row ribbons and also include reflective material, which reflects the light from the ccfl. No way to get even a few mm's. Besides, how would it fit with a 14.1" LCD bezel either way?

HI xyz, I hope you are still reading the forum. I am trying to do exactly what you did but need more help than you did. I have a T60P with a working SXGA lcd and I have bought the exact 14.1 Inch Sharp LQ141U1LH02 UXGA you mention, but it is brand new, so it can't possibly have any Lenovo programming on it. I am wondering how you reprogrammed your lcd, or if it was a pull from another T60P that was ready to go programming wise. Did you have to buy a UXGA inverter or cable and when you say you removed pin #2, this sounds like a very delicate operation - did you use some kind of extraction tool and where is the pin anyway? On the lcd chip or on the input cable or on the video card itself? Sorry for probably dumb sounding questions, but I would really like your help if you don't mind. Are you really saying that you changed nothing (inverter, cables, etc) and just pulled out pin #2 and that was it? That would be great if you could tell me where exactly where pin#2 is and how you pulled it without damaging anything else? Another thing that troubles me is that I found the spec sheet for the 14.1 Inch Sharp LQ141U1LH02 UXGA and pin #2 is not ground. Pins #1 and #2 are both 3.3Vcc power supply. Pins #3 and #4 are ground. So are these not the pins you are talking about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

True, it's a fit without excesses using the metal brackets to hold the
display in place. In my view that design has excess space around the
display so that users don't have to be gentle with their laptops, i.e.
dropping it, throwing it into a briefcase, etc. There's quite a bit of
room around the frame of the panel that seems like excess, i.e. not
critical for the panel to function, yet for protection of the panel
from getting damaged and to securely fasten to the case of the lid.
The space it requires to connect a 15" panel onto a 15" computer is a
tight fit due to the frame brackets which adds over a cm around the
display. Remove those mounting brackets and take 2 or 3 mm off the
sides (if that's possible, looks like it might be) and adhere the
frame into the 14.1" lid a different way, i.e. epoxy. Now that's not
OEM specs, but what I want to know is whether it can be done. It would
be an edge to edge display without much of a frame. I may do a youtube
video in March of the 15.0" QXGA panel along with the 14.1" notebook
lid explaining my ideas. I'll make a new thread regarding it if I decide it is
remotely possible. I haven't taken the T61p apart yet and won't have
time to do so until another week or two.

I may have confused the polarity of the pins...
But the main prob is on the sharp panel you have the 1 and 2 pins are connected.
On the lenovo panel they aren't grab a multimeter and try it.
I just desoldered the pin... just depends how competent you are with soldering..

its not possible for me to post a pci of the sharp panel as I have that back together now.
I will try and get a pic of a diff board to high light what I removed.

disconnect the cable en the right

carefully turn the panel over and remove pin

alternativley you could remove the corresponding pin on the cable

How is UXGA in the 14.1"? How easy is it to see? I have a 16" UXGA screen that is good to look at. But, I fear that UXGA may be too much at 14.1. For around 100 bucks, that LQ141U1LH02 is not bad.

So you just clip off pin #2 from the display connector, plug it in, and go. Pretty simple mod. I may have to move on getting a display.
