WindowsXP taskbar question

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Fri Nov 21, 2008 7:37 am

I'm using WinXP PRO on my T23. Lately the icons for volume and peripheral-removal are missing from the taskbar. Anyone know how to fix this? Rebooting doesn't do it.

Make sure "Hide Inactive Icons" is not checked. Also, look in the properties of the Start Button (right click on Start -> Properties and see if there is any setting for volume control. There is in Vista, but I am not sure about XP. Check in there to be sure. ... JDH

After you've checked for the Hide Inactive Icons like JD detailed, also go onto Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices and make sure that Place volume icon on the taskbar is checkmarked. I have had it mysteriously uncheck itself twice. As far as the Safely Remove Hardware icon, try plugging a thumb drive into a USB port and see if that icon pops back up.

Just had that problem. If you log off and re-log on, they should come back.

A friend gave me this URL:

Click on the listing: "Restore to XP Default".

This worked for me but it took a couple of tries and reboots. I don't know why but when I have issues I empty the Prefetch folder with <Start><run>type prefetch and delete all the files. It speeds up my computer. And I reboot.

An associate of mine found that on that his (other XP) laptop, delaying his log-in for 30-seconds or so solved his missing icons in the system tray problem. It worked on my R52, too.

I use Startup Delayer to stop some of the apps from loading right from the start. Since then I don't remember missing any taskbar icon after startup.
