Wrist-rest gets terribly hot :(

We're approaching summer really fast here in Denmark. I've got 23 degrees celsius in my room right now, where my thinkpad t41p resides. It's been on the whole day - doing nothing special.. I've just been surfing/chatting a bit, the cpu clock is at a stable 600mhz, with spikes to 800mhz at times, and the hard drive is at 42 degrees right now (measured using mobile meter).

Problem is, that the heat from the hard drive, is extremely noticeable through the right wrist rest. It is VERY uncomfortable to type on because of the heat - I find myself lifting my hand about every 20 seconds, just to cool off a bit.. it's really annoying me.

Has anybody else got this problem? Should 42 degrees feel hot on my hand?

My 5K80 only gets up to 42 C when doing very disk intensive things such as BitTorrent or defragging. Otherwise, it seems to stay around 38 C or so. At 42, it is slightly warm but not really uncomfortable at all (unlike my old D600, which would get very, very hot - this is something most D600 owners seem to complain about). I would imagine that your 7K60 is a bit warmer than mine because it is a 7K60

This is just another reason I'm leaning towards another 5K80 and not a 7K60 when I get another HD this summer.

Where can I get this Mobile Meter?

My 4200 RPM drive gets a bit warm at most, never hot.

42 degrees is internal HDD temp. There should be some gradient between HDD interior and palmrest, say 3-5 degrees. In any case 42 degrees is not hot it is warm. Though many human proteins get denatured by prolonged exposure to 42 degree the blood flow should be sufficient to keep you hand internal temperature below 37 degrees.
I have HDD temp at 40-42 and palmrest feels quite warm but tolerable (though I am used to carry bakers with boiling water in bare hand, lol..).
Dell D600 users often have their HDD running at 60 degrees... they use gloves to work with laptop.

Forgot to say that prolonged monitoring of HDD temp actually increases it. When program monitor HDD temp it accesses disk every 5-20 s (depending on the monitoring interval) thereby preventing HDD from entering low power idle state. So if you want HDD to run cooler do not monitor its temperature continuously.

Geobel - yeah that makes sense... but I never let my hd power down (because that stops downloads) - even so, it's acceptably cool some of the time.. like now - mobile meter says 41 degrees, yet I can stand typing on it right now - still not comfortable though.

Oh well :/

My guess was that T42 derives from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. "What is the best Notebook?" The answer is 42. (At least I hope so...)

I have a 5k80 80gb.
It's no more than 30C usually, quite cool.

Mine is a little warm too. I don't remember that happening with the T42 I RMA'd. Maybe I'll call them, but it seems normal to me. Plus, the environment is a little warm too. It's at 40deg for HD temp, a little uncomfortable.

My drive also makes some ticking noises, does anyone else's do that too? I have the 40gb 5400rpm

Those temps I think are normal
Also depending on your ambient temp.
As for the ticking that will go away after you use it for a while.
