Will I have trouble migrating Vista 64 from one W700 to new?

#1 Post by barrywohl » Mon Nov 24, 2008 8:52 am

Lenovo is sending me a replacement W700 for one with a defect. The two should be identical configurations, both with Vista Ultimate x64 and RAID 1 preinstalled.

What I would like to do is just remove the hard drives from the old one and slip them into the new one. I am worried that Vista Ultimate x64 will not permit this.

Can I just do this? Can I do it with the aid of Vista install disks? Can I do it with Symantic Ghost or Acronis True Image or Rescue and Recovery?

I could just reinstall the programs I use and copy over the data, but I am looking for something more simple, since reinstalling the software will involce calling vendors to explain that I'm not running their products on TWO W700s but just on a replacement machine.

Thanks in advance for suggestions and help.

you'll have to delete the new machine's RAID array, remove both drives, install the new drives, then set up a RAID 1 array telling the controller to mirror existing data from drive 0 to drive 1.

refer to the hardware maintenance manual for RAID setup.

good luck!
