is this HDD ok with T40p?

#1 Post by rapasoft » Tue Nov 25, 2008 1:14 pm

I want to buy this HDD - HM160HC HDD SAMSUNG - because it has quite good reviews. Will it fit with in my t40p? BIOS is "new" (2007) so it should be recognized by it. Does anyone have this disk? I wanted to now if it is fast and quite.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum!

That drive will work just fine in your T40p...I haven't tried it personally, but if there are issues that's what the manufacturer's warranty is for...

Welcome to the forum!

There are several ThinkPad-users who have reported using this HDD (try the Search-function in this forum, and you will see!). I suggest you review the following threads: T41: Which HDD to buy? .. and Samsung HM160HC issues. and 100Gb, 7200rpm ATA drive availability (mentioning the HM160HC sometimes emitting audible "superclicks"?!)and T41 - HD recommendations ? and What do you guys think about this HD ? and T40 (Type 2373) Largest Harddrive possible?... just as a start...

Personally, I am very satisfied with the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 series (you'll need one of the PATA's, not SATA's!). Seagate comes with a 5-year warranty, and Seagate also provide free-of-charge the Acronis True Image program (however limited to Seagate HDD's!) under the name DiscWizard, which makes cloning of your old HDD onto a new Seagate HDD very easy!

I have it on my T40 - I had to change a setting to get rid of the clicking issue (see links above). Definitely one of the fastest, if not the fastest, PATA drives around. Quiet too, at least compared to the 7200rpm I was coming from.

Hi everyone!
After following the discussions here, I purchased a Samsung 160GB drive for my T40.
Took the old 30GB IBM drive out and placed in a portable cabinet, just for security.
Well here is the experience:
1. Physical installation - no problem, just mount in the bay.
2. Startup with my XP disc in the CD-ROM drive was no problem either, and the windows installations formatting of the new drive went without problems.
3. And a virgin XP installation provided a startup-time of just 80 secs., a major improvement over 3-4 mins. with the old drive and 4 years of installation clutter.
4. But, Alas, windows did not detect any of the network hardware, and then it is a bit difficult to obtain updates. But accuiring the drivers from a combination of the old drive and Lenovo website gave internet functionality with not too many problems.
5. Installation of XP service packs 2 and 3 required registration by Microsoft, which was not straightforward. A telephone call to MS support cleared that with not too much delay.
6. The windows "file and settings transfer wizard" was run on the old system and was no problem to run with the new disk. But hooray, this is Microsoft, and settings for Firefox and Firebird had to be done from the old disk manually. Here it proved a good decision to have the old drive intact and running in the USB cabinet.
7. After installing all the programs again, the start-up-time is now 90 secs., still a significant improvement over the old system/disk.
8. All in all, it took a full day to get through.
9. But the drive runs fine, is quiet and - knock, knock - has not given any strange noises or superclics - yet?

hhmcsv: haven't you tried some cloning software like Acronis Migrate Easy or something..

well, i tried to clone old disk to the new one, unfortunately, when i booted up cloned disk windows gave me BSOD O:-) ...

anyway, now i have Ubuntu and I'm much more satisfied with it. Have been using it for few years now, so i wasn't able to get back to windows..

but back to topic - this disk is great improvement from the old Toshiba...
hdparm test results are:

Timing cached reads: 578 MB in 2.00 seconds = 288.84 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 200 MB in 3.02 seconds = 66.16 MB/sec

And there is absolutely no noise, just the regular silent "swooosh" noise of spinnig plates :-)

it was really great buy, the disk and the t40p :-)

No, I did not consider cloning the old disk very much. I had a few unsolved software problems (unability to update Adobe reader, amongst others).
So I wanted a clean system!

It's still working good on its second day :D

Just a question for you all:

I too have a t40p with the great Samsung 160HC, but I need to use centrino hardware control to set the performance to 254 maximum performance, otherwise the HDD would unload/load the head every 2 seconds and would probably not survive the year. The constant clicking drives me crazy anyway.

How did you solve that, because you said you have no problems?

I tried to set the Samsung firmware to max. performance, but that did not work. Only centrino HW control.

Is there a way to set the load/unload time to maybe 10 seconds or so?

I did not do anything :D
Firstly because I do not have any of the problems mentioned, secondly because I woud'nt be able to find where to do the adjustments :?:

Well, now as I put my ear to the palmrest in the right side over the HDD, I can hear activity regularly, without me doing anything with the T40. But it is not audible at normal working position (and I am not deaf :D ).
The only noise it makes, is the cooling fan, and that is not very loud either (and not constant).

i think that's natural, because there are lot of services working on the background... i can't hear anything either in normal surroundings... just in very quiet room and with my ear on hdd...
