Can I drop my HD from T40 into X31?

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Wed Nov 26, 2008 11:38 am

Got an X31 coming and see it as a replacement for my trusty T40, which would then be a backup machine. Thing is, the T40 has a 100gb 7200rpm drive in it which I would really like to use in the X31.

Any chance it would work if I just dropped it in?

or do I need to get an identical and clone?

Thanks for the help.

David, physically there is no issue, the 100gb 7200 rpm IDE drive will work fine in an X31. Also, most modern cloning software (.e.g Acronis True Image) can resize partitions on the fly, so the larger drive is not an issue either. The problem is going to be, will the T40 image boot in an X31, and the answer is 'maybe'. It depends on how similar the hardware is between the two machines, and even if they were very close it is still s 50/50 proposition due to different (HAL) Hardware Abstraction Layers, chipsets, video adapters, etc. . The best way to do this would be to backup your critical data and start from scratch with a set of X31 Recovery CD's. With that said, if you provide the machine type models of both machines we can make a better guess as to compatibility and probability of boot success, but again it is just a guess...you'd have to try it. If someone comes along who has actually done it with the models that you post, then that is a different story.

Thanks Harry.

I don't have the model number of the X31 yet, maybe it will come in today. It's coming with the 40gig OEM drive, 1.4, 512.

Just trying to get the X31 as close to what I have now (t40 dothan 1.7, 100gig 7200, 2 gig RAM, as I can. I know it will be some slower but still faster than the S10 for $250 less.

we'll see how it goes.

I appreciate the help

I've actually done this and it worked fine.

I acquired an X31 not too long ago and my father in law has a T41. Since he was going on a long trip, I suggested that he temporarily swap his machine with the X31. Both machines are XGA, 1.6ghz CPU, standard ATI GPU, 40Gb HDD, and Atheros chipped. Swapping the HDD didn't even produce a "New Hardware Found" notification. The machines just booted up as if nothing had ever happened. :D

In my personal experience, I have found that you can swap hard drives between the following machines with no issues:
R40
X31
T40
T41

Just pulled my HD out of my T42p and plugged it into my X32. Worked flawlessly, just had to uninstall and reinstall the video driver.

well, since the seller on eBay reneged on the deal, I'm back looking, so it may be a while. I could have taken the unit alone at $154.50, which was a good price, but the auction stated it came with the media slice and he refused to refund anything other than the full amount and gave me a take it or leave it option.

principle of the thing...

will probably cost me money :)

and he'll relist and sell it for more

LYPC, huh? I'd file a seller non-performance strike with eBay. Both the description and (one) picture shows the media slice being included.

I did, not that it mattered. They've already listed and sold the machine again for far more than I originally won it at, which was ther plan all along.

Wrestling between the X31 and X40.

I'm assuming they are about the same size weight and that the X31 with my 7200RPM HD and maxed out on ram would blow away the X40 with same amount of RAM and with the 4200PRM 1.8 drive.

So I'm trying to ignore the X40s which are plentiful and snag an X31 which are not. :)
