T41 - video card location (problem)

#1 Post by electrizer » Fri Nov 28, 2008 6:27 am

Hello All!

Just wanted to ask if you happen to know whereabouts is located the video card in T41, and is it possible to have access to it by taking the cover off?

The problem is that this morning when I started moving and carrying the laptop around the screen would get choppy and fuzzy with every movement. It looks like either the card is screwed up or the cable/slot connection is loose, however it is connected.

Thanks upfront!
Electrizer

PS: Or maybe it's that ribbon-like connection cable between the base of the laptop and the screen?

The most common cause for those symptoms would be a loose GPU. If you remove the keyboard it will be next to the CPU and Northbridge, with big ATI lettering on it. It may be underneath a heatsink if you have a long fan. If you apply pressure to that chip and the problem goes away, then it's a loose GPU. You will have to leave the keyboard partially connected to power the laptop up. Use the maintenance manual for removals.

I'd like to extend limitless gratitude to you HarryC! :) Actually what you advised me to do has worked! Surprisingly, though, because that ATi chip is very firmly solded to the board so I though that applying pressure is going to amount to nothing. However, when I was moving the machine around, the slightest shakes caused the screen to flicker so it might have actually been it. Anyway, thank you! :D
