File Q:\FactoryRecovery\sdrivebackup.wim not found ?

#1 Post by bill bolton » Fri Nov 28, 2008 7:11 pm

Has anyone with encountered an error message which says....
  • "The file Q:\FactoryRecovery\sdrivebackup.wim required by this program cannot be found. The process has been cancelled"
... when trying to create a set of Product Recovery disks on a recent Think Pad with S: and Q: partitions?

Cheers,

I'm also facing same problem now.
My new laptop is W500 with VISTA 32.
Where can I find ' Sdrivebackup ' file there?
I tried everything, recovery to factry condtion, instaling all latest driver and others. however same announcement ppped up every time.
Right now I have come to a deadlock with this problem.

I checked out the Q and S drives and it did seem to have various images on there, enough to contain a full backup/restore partition. I made a backup of those partitions to an external drive and did a clean install of Vista though, as I felt the space used by the unusable recovery partition was wasted and I wanted to remove a portion of the preinstalled software.

I suspect that the person who performed the preinstall of Windows on this laptop, did not complete the entire process of setting up the recovery partition, but I have not taken the time to figure out how to complete it myself and finish this process.

A clean install was easy thanks to the Thinkvantage System Update software, which took care of downloading/installing the needed drivers/utilities for everything on the laptop to work.

After several phone calls over the problem, I did manage to get Lenovo support to send me a set of recovery disks (which is somewhat amazing, as they rarely do that in Australia).

Has anybody mounted the .wim files with IMAGEX to see what they contain? You can always try to create a sdrivebackup.wim with all the contents of S: and see what happens. The Windows Automated Installation Kit will do it for you.

Hm. Though I'm very used to command line options, I have been unable to export/mount the images.

However, when checking out the RECOVERY.INI file in the FactoryRecovery directory, I think I found the command used to put back this recovery set to a partition. I have no spare partition to try this on though. Perhaps I could do it within a virtual machine, but I do not have the time to set that up at present.
[partition1]
size=1499
type=07
label=SERVICEV003
volume=S
active=1
recfromsp=0
imagename=Sdrivebackup.wim
install=iuimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\
installsplit=iuimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.swm 1 S:\ /ref Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup*.swm
[partition2]

type=07
label=SW_Preload
volume=C
active=0
recfromsp=0
imagename=Cdrivebackup.wim
install=iuimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Cdrivebackup.wim 1 C:\

You probably need this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

That is definitely the correct file to be referencing. What is "iuimagex.exe" ? It looks like it accepts the same switches at the original imagex.exe. Weird.

What does the directory structure of Q:\ look like?

Final solution: create a new (empty) file in the Q:\FactoryRecovery folder and name it sdrivebackup.wim.
It works.
