People on that forum have been doing some crazy stuff, including swapping CPUs on X series...

At today's subdued market I'd stay away from modding an older machine such as T43 since I really can find no justification for it apart from proving that it can be done...

A slightly nicer looking mod variant on the same theme..

for a 14" it could be ncie esp if you want a 14" uxga otherwise I agree its not worth the hassle.

What I've meant is that prices of used ThinkPads have gone down so low that I really wouldn't perceive modding a T43 (which I happen to love VERY much, my second favourite ThinkPad of them all) to be a feasible project and invest time and money just to enable it to take SATA drives...when I can buy a T60 with IPS LCD for less than $600 that already takes these with no sweat on my part...

Modding of this nature is great for people who have a lot of time or who don't put a dollar value on it. Unfortunately, I am not in that position anymore, as much as I would like to be.

Having said that, two or three years ago I would've been very interested in such a project...and know people who have tried to accomplish this, but failed. My respect for members of the other forum who have succeeded is huge, but my personal need for such a machine is non-existent right now.

Hope this clears the fog...

Actually i just purchased a t43 from a knowledgeable forum member who told me that "T43 requires a SATA not PATA hard drive" so I think that it depends on the model.

It most certainly requires a PATA drive, sorry to disagree with my old friend Ron...and it DOES NOT depend on the model.

Then it was likely a typo on his part. Sorry for posting misleading information.
