z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
This all started because I am cannot get my integrated camera to work on my z61t running Vista SP1--pretty fresh install. I called tech support to troubleshoot and the agent wanted me to run the Lenovo System Toolbox and check the hardware.
I have downloaded the files from Lenovo and have been unable to run the system tests. When I open the program, I receive the following error:
"Device Discovery Error
Your system was busy performing other task when {title} attempted to collect information.
Click OK and restart the application.
If the error persists, restart the system."
I have obviously tried rerunning the program and restarting the computer. I am not running any other programs and have tried pausing my anti-virus. I have updated all drivers and uninstalled and reinstalled the application multiple times.
Can anyone help? I want to make sure that my hardware is all functioning properly as my warranty is over in 15 days. Thank you!

z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
Same problem occurs on my W500.
I discovered that if I UNINSTALL Firefox 3.0.5, the Lenovo System Toolbox runs just fine.
This is reversible - if I then REINSTALL Firefox, the "Device Discovery Error" recurs, and if I RE-UNINSTALL Firefox, all is well.
So, on my W500 at least, there is an incompatibility between Firefox and Lenovo System Tpols. Note carefully, it is not necessary that Firefox be running when Lenovo System Toolbox fails, just that it be installed.
Unfortunately this is the sort of problem that neither supplier is going to care very much about.
Hope this workaround helps someone.

Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
Is anyone with Firefox 3.0.5 able to run the Lenovo System Toolbox? The toolbox has also stopped working on my T61 and uninstalling Firefox to access the toolbox is certainly an awkward workaround and most definately not a solution. With so many folks running Firefox 3.0.5, it would seem that this problem would have been reported more often. Or is it just that most folks don't use the Toolbox very often and don't realize that it has succumbed on their machine?
Ah, for the good old days when all my software worked. (which on reflection never happened.)

I'm having the same problem on my T42. I'd rather give up System Toolbox rather than Firefox. Will probably end up installing previous version of PC Doctor.

Firefox 3.06 is out, if anybody with the problem wants to give it a shot.

Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
That's the one I've got. Thanks.
Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
My T61 continues to have this problem with Firefox 3.0.6 and the most recent version of the Toolbox. Neither update changed the outcome. Franasia, did installing an older PC-Doctor take you back to a working state?
While the issue has been reported on several forums, the combination of the Toolbox and Firefox must be used by many people. Perhaps the combination is working for some and those of us with Toolbox failing might be in the minority.
So does anyone have Toolbox and Firefox 3.0.5 or higher working normally?

Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
OK, I tested this on a couple of my Thinkpads. On my T42 I still have PC-Doctor 5 (to be precise, 5.1.4755.11), and have had various versions of Firefox and am currently up to 3.06.
This combo works fine. So I tried my own Z61t, upgraded the Firefox from 3.05 to 3.06, and I had earlier upgraded to the Toolbox via the System Update. The Toolbox did work when I originally installed it, shortly after I got the Z, but I did not have Firefox installed then. But now I get the same error as everyone else.
I thought I had a workaround --obviously this is happening in the Toolbox version of PC-Doctor because it is the first version that is web-enabled (correct me if I'm wrong). I thought that perhaps other folks had answered the dialog that first pops up when you start the Toolbox to always use the web-features and never ask about it again. What if I said NO everytime? I had already made a point of not checking off the box about never being prompted again.
Alas, not enabling the web connectivity made no difference to the error. So it looks to me like the easiest workaround might be to go back to the non-Toolbox version of PC-Doctor.

Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
I have not gone back to older version but rather waiting to see if someone comes up with a solution. Have recently restored my machine to new HDD and everything else appears to be working fine, so I don't have any urgency to run Toolbox at the moment.alpineguy wrote:My T61 continues to have this problem with Firefox 3.0.6 and the most recent version of the Toolbox. Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
Paul Fallon of PC-Doctor has reported on a Lenovo blog that this error in the Lenovo Toolbox has been corrected and the new version has been sent to Lenovo. He said to expect the update to be posted later in the week. Sounds good to me.
Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
If it's been corrected, the corrected version has yet to be made available on the LST download page. I ran into this device discovery error just this week when downloading and running the latest version of LST on a T40 (which, of course, has Firefox 3.0.7 installed).
Before I found this discussion thread via a Google search I contacted ThinkPad support about this LST error. The support rep was unaware of this problem, so thus unaware that it is a Firefox-LST incompatibility issue. Given the widespread usage of Firefox, you'd think this would be on tech support's radar.

Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
Runs fine with Firefox 3.0.7 installed.
Looks like this problem is solved.
Regards to all.

On what machine type? Not on my X32. That's the same Toolbox version I installed last week.opstx wrote:I just downloaded and installed System Toolbox version 5.1.5183.09.

edit: Not on the T40 I installed it on. I haven't tried running it yet on my X32.
Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
To be specific, the problem is solved by Toolbox version 5.1.5183.0 on our ThinkPad W500 and a ThinkPad R60. System Toolbox runs fine with Firefox 3.0.7 installed and running.opstx wrote:I just downloaded and installed System Toolbox version 5.1.5183.09.

Re: z61t - Lenovo System Toolbox - Device Discovery Error
I have an X61 Tablet running XP Service Pack 3, with the latest Firefox install (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009021910 Firefox/3.0.7) and the latest Lenovo System Toolbox (lst5setup_518309x86). I've tried every trick I've read or can think of, and the Error message still appears when running Lenovo System Toolbox.
