W500 Power Consumption

#1 Post by comptiger5000 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 9:06 pm

I moved my W500 from Server 2003 x86 to Server 2008 x64. I am running Windows Classic theme, some extra services, etc. turned off. CPU usage at idle is no higher than it was under 2003. All seems well, except for the system consistently using about 2W more power under 2008. This is on both integrated and dedicated graphics. My battery life originally was about 5 hours dedicated, 6.5-7 integrated. Under 2008, it is much less: about 4 hours dedicated, 5.5 integrated.

Any ideas as to what is causing the extra power usage? My settings (power manager) are all the same. CPU deeper sleep is enabled in both cases. My best guess is that it isn't working under 2008.

Hi Comptiger,

are you really getting 4 hours? Can you try with max performance settings. I get about 2.5 hours with my T500 on max performance.

This is with all the power saving stuff turned on, excluding the graphics card setting. On max power, I'm sure it would be less. Either way, my point isn't what battery life I get, it's why it got worse under 2008, as compared to 2003.
